I'm selling a hitch that I was told came from a 72-79 Ranchero.  Gotta guy coming to get it tomorrow.  However, I want to make sure it truly is for a Ranchero.  I assumed (and it seems like I was told) it would also work on a 72-77 intermediate station wagon, like my 76 Montego.  However, when comparing it to my wagon, I don't think it will work.  The rails of the hitch that bolt to the frame are not parallel to the ground, like the frame of my wagon.  The rails are angled.
At the rear of the Ranchero, does the frame angle/taper up as it nears the back of the vehicle?

I've attached a pic for clarification.  The hitch is positioned so that the receiver is sticking straight out the back (parallel to the ground) as it should be.  Notice the mounting bracket of the hitch is angled.  This indicates to me that the frame rails of the vehicle would need to be angled (and not parallel to the ground), in order for this to work.  The frame rails of my wagon are parallel to the ground.  If the Ranchero is the same, then I don't see how this will work.

I was under the impression that wagon and ranchero used the same frame...

OK the brackets are perpendicular to the ground but they're not level

there's only 1 horizontal bolt on each side?

have you had a look around www.ranchero.us for some pics?

Here are some photos of mine:

The one you have is a bit different. Yes the ranchero and the midsize wagon frames are the same out back from 72-79. (77 for the wagons).

Wagons after 73 have energy-absorber bumpers, so the bumper mounts are different and may be why this is different...

Thanks for the pics Dan!  Your Ranchero frame is definitely different than my wagon's frame.  Looks like yours is angled, just like my hitch.  Where my wagon's frame is not angled.  It's parallel to the ground.
