I'm rebuilding my 74 gran torino with 351w and i really wanted to put a gear drive in rather than a chain but I'm worried about metal shavings. I've heard a few horror stories about gear drives so I'm hoping I could a little advice on the matter. Thanks.

i put one in my 74 351w! you have to do some grinding to set up the proper clearance for the idler, which may require grinding the bump on the block flat and i had to grind out the 1/8" wide ridge in the timing cover inside where the idler pin will be. you need about .010-.020" clearance away from the inside of the timing cover at the end of the longer idler pin with the pin touching the block and the gears aligned when viewed from the side. you may need to grind the end of the long pin to get the right clearance and alignment. if the engine is out and you have the pan off it makes it much easier to put the cover up there and look in where the pan should be to see in between the block/ cover/ gears
