Bumper Chrome.
how do I paint it?
I am cutting, welding, sectioning and tucking.
I don't want to send it out to rechrome so looking at painting it the bright silver and should look good.

So, HOW do you prep it for paint and what do you use?

after all the welding, etc. i'd sand blast it to "rough up" the chrome, then any body filler if needed, then a couple of coats of good self etching primer like PPG DP or omni, then a coat of 2k sandable primer to sand smooth, then paint Big smile

I like sand blasting myself, especially if painting over chrome.

Yep. You have to remove the chrome/nickel plating to get proper adhesion. Unfortunately, that spray coating does not last under normal wear and tear. I've used every brand, and it looks great at first, but then degrades. A better choice is powdercoating. Todd (White Lightning) powdercoated his bumpers and they looked fantastic.

Years ago, I helped a buddy paint his bumpers. I think I remember him stripping the chrome plating off, and I think he used some sort of low grade acid like muratic acid, or something like that. The chrome pealed of in large flake pieces with a putty knife. Then, we just sanded, smoothed, primed, and painted. But again, this was YEARS ago. But I do remember he removed the chrome plating.

Belt sander (Yikes!!!) with a fairly fine paper. Do NOT let it sit/stop in one place. strip the chrome/nickel, bodywork the bumper, then paint to match or contrast the body. (Or, paint metallic silver like a lot of guys do with their fiberglas bumper skins.)
Muriatic acid (20% hydrochloric) will not strip chrome (at least, not very fast/well) as I use it to get rust off my bumpers and the chrome is still hanging in there.
Carl, Paint to match your wheels and tie the colors together Cool

That's my thought!
Bumpers, wheels, tail light framing.
Possibly EVERYTHING that is polished aluminum, chrome, or pot metal ALL done in the Silver Frost color from the wheel I painted before I sent them off to be powder coated.

They will SHINE and have metallic. YEAH you will know they aren't chrome but hey, they will tie it all in and look good I THINK/HOPE! Especially after chopping, cutting, sectioning and welding the bumpers.

Here is the Powdercoated wheel...

here is the one I painted that Silver Frost(over gray primer) color as a comparison, it was the BRIGHTEST silver I could find and would be the color I use on the bumpers, taillights and other trim pieces...

carl, if you want to power coat or rechrome them after welding you would need to make sure the cuts are lined up as best as possible, weld then grind down flat so it is as close to looking like it is one piece (basically you'd be shaping and filling with weld) i grind the welds down with a 4" angle grinder leaving them about 1/32" above level, then grind them down further with an angle die grinder with a roloc disc to shape and blend the metal like sanding body filler to it's desired shape, same idea but using welds as your filler! it's a lot of work but it can be done (if you look in my thread... the wiper cover i made was done that way...it's made from seven different pieces of metal)
