Greetings Fellas,
New member from Iowa that recently purchased a 71 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler. 1 of 25 with the "C" code 429CJ non ram air and 4 speed. Have the original window sticker - Mercury dealer ordered in Spokane, WA. Competition Green It had to have spent quite a bit of life on the west coast as it is a super solid car that runs and drives and mostly original paint from 71. Has patina, but it's as it is and been driven which makes that in itself cool. Only thing missing on the exterior is the front spoiler and has some older 14's Magnum 500's. It is a non restored survivor. Came on to learn about various information on the 71's and learn from you fellas good sources of parts and suppliers. Hoping you could share what you've found and experienced over the years. Have learned with some internet searching that Crites may still make the front spoiler and another name I have found is at one time about 10 years ago, a Monte Scott was having some made out of ABS. The only number I have been able to find for a Monte Scott was 435-882-0368 mountain time but that was from internet posts from 10 years ago. I called the number and a nice lady answered but said Monte no longer lived there. She suggested I look at this the Mercury Cyclone registry or some of the Mercury Cyclone websites. She thought he may still be making them. Anyone know ? So here I am, introducing myself to you fellas and very excited to have purchased my 71 429CJ non ram air 4SP Cyclone Spoiler. Can any of you fellas confirm if Crites is still making the front spoiler w/ brackets or know of Monte Scott that I could get in touch with him to purchase a spoiler w/ brackets ? Any help appreciated. Thanks fellas - I appreciate the website.

I was able to locate Monte Scott about front spoilers so that is cool.
Looking forward to learning more from you fellas and about your experiences and history with locating parts and suppliers. Thanks |

Ok a few more to look at. Remember it's a non restored survivor.
It has a few engine add ons typical of the 70's.... Bigger carb, Accel coil, Mallory Dual Point and Modified Air Cleaner. The shifter boot is back on now. I'm sure it spent a Sunday or two play time on the strip. Kind of a time machine. Enjoy ! Enjoy. |

Wow. I would be torn between leaving it original or restoring. They are only original once.

My plans and thoughts are to drive it for a while and enjoy it.
There is a definite cool factor to being un-restored. My plan is not to replace anything if I don't have to but to preserve as much as possible. Eventually there are some areas for preservation sake will need attention. ( lower rear quarters - just outer surface rust ) that I don't want it to escalate. It is a amazingly solid car for being unrestored with a few typical changes of the 70's , carb, distributor, intake. I did see what appeared to be some type of dent in the drivers rear quarter that appeared to be fixed a long time ago and one other in the drivers front fender that was fixed a long time ago. Just typical bumps or scrapes from the 70's. The rest of the paint - appears to be original and faded from it's glory days. Like me- aging with a bit of faded paint myself. Like I said, for now I am going to drive it and enjoy it. The few places I've driven - gas station, hardware store....had more than a couple fellas ask what the hell it is ( Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Dodge - you name it guesses ) and once you tell them, have gone nuts - especially at the hardware store...this guy stood there, looked it over for about a half hour, raved about it and talked for another half hour after that. As far as a couple fellas that said buff it..... can't buff much with fade to original primer as you can see in the pictures. There is one headliner seam that unraveled so I am going to take to the local auto upholstery shop to see if I can get it sewn back together. Like I said - I don't plan to replace anything I don't have to...... BUT being as rare as it is, eventually- eventually It will get the restoration it deserves. Thanks Fellas for the welcome.

This is when I first got it. Check out the lower left center part of the picture for the white tight spider nest in the roof drip rail.....Or maybe that's a small moth cocoon.
This car was not driven much at all in the last 13 years. The gentleman I purchased it from told Me basically he drove it around his neighborhood a hand full of times per year to circulate the fluids and it stayed in the garage the rest of the time. It had spider webs weaved in nooks and crannies of the undercarriage. I did hit the car wash to spray it off. Edited by 71 429CJ 4SP Spoiler - 21-August-2015 at 3:05PM |

I checked it out based on your suggestion. All I see is Torino specific posts and nothing pertaining to Mercury Cyclone Spoilers. There was a post about a Mercury Cyclone Spoiler T-Shirts available back in 2014. That's about it. |

Most guys that would like a Torino cobra would also enjoy seeing the mercury cousin. (JMO) So just introduce yourself and post your story. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Not trying to push you away from this site because it IS a great site but where GTS.org is more 72-76 focused although with covering the other years, torinocobra is HEAVY 70/71 Torino and Cyclone but covers the other years. You are definitely doing yourself an injustice by not posting this there.

I checked it out and registered on both the CMT Registry with Robert and GTS as well.
Both are enjoyable. |
