Maybe black with a blue laser stripe. My wife said "why would you restore a classic car and not make it look classic".....so we will see lol.

Blue fire on a black base would look incredible on your 73 GTS, IMO! Like others have said, that is what makes it YOUR 73 GTS. If you have it done, ask your painter if he/she uses several varieties of blue base in addition to white. Ask if he/she does several varieties of blue candy also. I like to use lots of pure candy concentrate when I spray the true fire. It really adds amazing depth without losing base color and blends tremendously well when compared to candy basecoat. I also usually add a little Ice Pearl. Not much, very subtle, just enough to make it pop a little. I like the personal touch on most classic cars, not overly done like a billboard where you lose the car to the graphics/artwork, but tasteful. It has my vote!
On a side note, what tire/wheel combo do you have or are you looking at to go with the paint? |

I really don't know, but I've been seeing these magnums people like and I think they would look amazing with the glossy black body and blue flames.

I have his instructional DVD and a bunch of his templates that I made. I've been practicing this technique.

I'm actually going to look into constructing my own paint booth and practicing on my truck (92 Dakota).

So, a lot of this is about taste. I am a fan of the WWFD (What would Foose Do?). I like taking what would be done back in the day and trying a modern interpretation. Take flames. I like the old school big grill back red/yellow/orange obnoxious flames. Great if its 1975, not so much 2015. But I see a lot of ghost flames that have the same size/impact but are more subtle and bring more attention overall.
My car is Gold Glow and I want to go with something along the lines of a HOK Solar Gold family. Same family, but with pearl, and just jumps out. Again, its all about taste, but you need to find what works on your car and what you are trying to convey. The best looking cars have a package - the wheels match the ride height, the paint matches the era and the bling matches the paint/wheels/era. Thats why prizmatic paint and spinners might be fine on a modern inport, but not so much on a Chevelle. YMMV, not valid in Hawaii or Alaska. Void where prohibited.

robot9000, Excellent points. I have to agree! I also think that your HOK Solar Gold idea on your car would be very nice! I use the HOK line almost exclusively. I find that all their finish products from primers to clear are easy to spray and easy to mix/combine. I am also a huge fan of old school flames. I know it may sound contrary to what I had said about graphics/artwork being subtle, but I think a black Deuce Coupe with old school red/yellow/orange flames will always be cool!

Whether it's traditional style flames or the real fire as long as it's a quality job and tastefully done, I'd say go for it.
Our shop does both styles of flames. I've done a couple thousand (2300+) of the traditional style flames and only about 40 of the real fire jobs. All real fire jobs were done on motorcycles as is about 95% of my traditional style flames. |
