I'm kind of late to the party but I was reading a thread a couple pages back referring to the V-10 as "a gas guzzling, gutless pig"

For those not versed with Ford's V-10, I'd like to defend its honor. I am qualified since I have a 2004 Super Duty with a 6.8L 2V V-10 with 168,000 hard worked miles.

1) My truck gets 10-11 mpg city and 15 mpg hwy. This is with 4.30 gears. A buddy has 1994 F-250 with a 460 that gets 8 mpg city, 11 hwy with 4.10 gears. His truck is a full 1,000 lbs lighter. My buddy with the 8.1L in his GMC 2500 does well to break 12 mpg on the highway (4.10's).

2) The "gutless, fuel sucking pig" V-10 powers Class A motorhomes as well as class B. It's a well respected engine in the towing & RV world (which, btw is what it was designed for).

3) The '04 year 2V engine makes 310 hp and 425 lb ft of torque. The '05- current makes 362 hp and 457 lb ft. Hardly gutless. The 8.1L GM is rated at 330 hp and 455 lb ft.

4) If you cruise eBay and look at gas Super Duty trucks; it is not uncommon to find several V-10 trucks with 300,000 + miles. They are a very rugged engine.

The 6.8L in any variation is not a hotrod engine. It was designed to be a good pulling gas option and rock solid reliable, and that's what it is.

Had them in a couple work trucks...
E350/450 16', 20' box trucks.
Couldn't get out of their own way, but a good pulling grunt motor.
I don't think either one got more than 4-5 mpg in the city, maybe 10 on the highway, downhill, with a tailwind.
Floor the gas, lots of noise, but no acceleration to speak of.

drove one in a u-haul from Wisconsin to Washington here, power seemed fine (not that we could really use it--got up to 70 mph and the car trailer started swaying bad) but mileage was crap!!! best we got was 6 1/4 mpg through Wyoming Ouch but it was a road trip-- with a few "almost joe worthy " stories WinkLOL

Were these 2000 or earlier trucks? That engine was not up to the snuff that the '01 and later were. If they were 2001 and later, then I have to ask what the gross weight was that you were lugging around?

I have a 22 ft enclosed trailer that weighs 3500 lbs. I've had a 7500 lb Massey Furguson diesel tractor on board and pulled it for 35 or so miles through rolling hills. Total weight of the unit was 17,900 lbs. It was no rocket ship, but I did not impede traffic either. (this is the day I decided to upgrade my rotors to drilled and slotted).

Actually 6 1/4 for a loaded truck pulling a trailer at 65 mph (guessing) is not bad. You have to also look at the aerodynamics of a Uhaul as well.

one was a 2001 dual rear wheel, 20 foot box, the other was about the same age, single rear wheel, 16 foot box. They would pull anything (20+ foot trailers) while loaded to the roof with tools, lumber and related crap and were unstoppable, but were s-l-o-w. Think F150 with a 300 I6.

I have a 38ft motorhome with a v10.  Moves it pretty good even when towing a jeep.  Likes to rev - not uncommon to his 5500+ RPM's pulling up hills.

There does not seem to be a lot of aftermarket stuff for them.  I don't know how you move the torque curve down to a streetable RPM without a new cam.

Neat idea, but not vary practical for a street rod

Cool car, but the body mods made it look a lot more "pinto-y" in the first couple pix. Look at the pic where they are talking about the hood...
Not sayin' it's bad... just everyone I knew who was into IIs was adamant about them not being pintos.
The pic in bare metal is awesome!

I had a V10 in my F 250 super duty (2000) with a 5 spd manual. This truck was good for 16-17 MPG empty and 9-11 MPG loaded (depending on driving habits and road conditions). Truck was running a 5.30 rear end gear and was a TOTAL stump puller! I enjoyed for 10 years and sold it in 2010 when I bought  the 09 Charger. I have nothing but good things to say about the V10.

Doesn't the V10 like to spit plugs? I have a friend who's family has a ford v10 powered motor home and he has all kinds of stories about descending mountains and almost dosing off when suddenly "BANG!!"  "POW POW POW POW"

Don't see why it wouldn't. It's a 5.4 with 2 more cylinders tacked on.

The earlier ones did v-10 and v-8's. Only 2-3 threads holding on to that plug (what monkey designed that one?) But ford did correct the problem and the V-10 is a pretty good work horse.
