How do you remove the coat hanger thing from side panel. I don't want to break it.

Use a thin small flat head screwdriver and start to pry it off from the bottom of the hangar and slip the vinyl cover off the plastic retainer that is underneath. It slips off the plastic housing going towards the top. The vinyl hangar cover is thin so be careful not to puncture the headliner. Work it off gently as the plastic may be brittle and lift it up off the top.

When you remove the cover, there is a plastic retainer underneath it, the retainer is held onto the car roof with one screw. There is a picture below of the retainer.

Be careful prying, as your screwdriver will want to slip off and spear your headliner. This is something I really wish I didn't know...

Yes, you can remove the whole headliner safely, but you might have to remove the rear windshield as well. Because the rear windshield might hold the rear portion of the headliner in place.

Notice in the picture below how the 72-76 headliner wraps underneath the lip of the rear windshield. I do not know if the 77-79 headliners are the same.

Do the later car still wrap under the glass? I thought it was only the gasketed windows (72-76)...(And WHY the F@#%!!! would you put something porous UNDER the seal that keeps the rain out... I mean... I heard everyone was on dope in the 70s... But SERIOUSLY... What were they THINKING!!!!)
Rant over. We will now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

I do not know about an LTD II's headliner, but my Ranchero's was wrapped around the window frame as the above pictures shown(maybe not as bad). I made my own headliner form-fit panel out of 3/16" insulating board and applied the newer style foam backed headliner material. I will say this is done A LOT easier in a Ranchero than an LTD II.

It's in a parts car. It's good practice in case you ever need to take yours out.

That glue has been there a LONG time, I doubt a heat gun will help, possibly brake cleaner/acetone on a rag will help loosen the glue. Probably best would be to rip as much of the headliner off the window frame and just remove what's left with the cleaner/acetone. Good luck.

Sail panels on inside of C-pillars, seat belt mounts, and side roof moldings come off, it should attach with clips and glue under the molding and then you can pop the support rods loose from the ends and the ceiling. the wire rods come down with the headliner, they run thru little sewn tubes/pockets in the headliner and snap into the roof.

Every one I've taken apart or seen taken apart looked like Freddy Kruger was learning to use a plasma cutter.
