Do you have to remove bottom half of dash to remove column.I have it all loose but appears dash must come out.

No, lower dash stays in place. Just remove the gauge cluster(a bit of a job unto itself) to access the 4 bolts that hold the column to the brake pedal/steering column anchor system. You will also have to remove the shift cable, ignition switch wiring harness plug, the lower rubber dust boot to access the pinch bolt that retains the intermediate shaft(between steering column and steering gear) to the steering column's lower shaft. Probably left something out, but you get the idea.

Even with a floor shift, I think there's a cable for the ignition interlock...
Could be thinking of G.M. though...

if you pull the boot back to remove the pinch bolt the intermediate shaft should slide off the column, then let the boot slide off, rotate the column a little while lifting it upwards enough to work the column out, checking for things that catch on the lower mounting tabs as it comes out.

Its out. Problem was age could not reach pinch bolt, so I removed rag joint. Ended up having to remove pinch bolt.
