What would be the best way to do this? I thought of takin the oil pump off, takin one of the oil galley plugs in the back of the block and maybe pour some diesel in, then hit it with a air nozzle. This sound about right? reason for this is someone must have used some sort of oil treatment or stop leak and after years of sittin it turned into a puddin skin type gooey mess. Engine had fresh oil in it before start up, ran fine for extended periods of time, no hint of metal in the oil when i drained it, but would feel better if I could try to remove whatever this stuff is before I put a new oil pump and pickup on it.

I used to put a quart or so of varsol in with the crankcase oil and let it idle for a while. Seemed to be lots of dirty crap come out when I drained it. Maybe refill with cheap clean oil and more varsol until it looks clean?

+1 on ATF. Works better than most engine flush crap. Use type F and be amazed at the filth that will come out.

engines out and on a stand, thats why I thought of maybe removin a galley plug in the back of the block and tryin to pressure flush diesel through it. Only thing that worries me with the methods suggested would be possible cloggin of the pickup screen tryin to flush it by runnin atf or other stuff through it.

are you planning on completely rebuilding it? if so have it "hot tanked" at the automotive machine shop

another problem is that you may clean it out too good

I recently put a qt of atf in my 4.6 before an oil change, all of a sudden it's a qt low soon after fresh fill

it never used a qt before ever

no, not at all, this engine runs like a top. In my almost 30 years of messin with vehicles, I have never seen this type of slimy gooey stuff come out of a engine. This engine has right around 89k miles on it with very little sludge build up to be found, thats what has me puzzled. I am pretty sure its one of those oil leak fixes in a can or similar.

Thats why I asked about just flushin it from the galley plugs with the oil pump off, effectively pushin any, if there is any, of this gooey stuff out of the passages. If I try to clean this out after its runnin again, then I have to worry about the sorts of weird things you describe (probably washin away light sludge build up around valve seals etc), not too mention the stuff could clog up the pickup and starve the engine for oil.

power wash.  if you don't have a pressure washer, toss it in the back of your truck and run up to the quarter car wash.

pressure wash the oil passages? I'm not talkin about the outside of the engine, but the actual internal oil passages.

**update**

Guess I was worried about nothin. Dropped the pan and this goey puddin was just in the very bottom inch of the oil pan. Guess it was just old coagulated oil ?. The pickup was about half clogged with it but when i took the pump off no signs of it on the other side of the pump or inside of it. I'll still replace the pump and pickup but don't think I'll worry much past that.

Pull a main cap and check for bearing damage. If none is found and the bearing looks good, then clean what you see the best you can. After it goes in the car give it fresh oil and filter and change after a few weeks of driving. Then return to it's recommended change intervals.
