I've got a 393 C with Aussie 302C heads. The cam is a Crane flat tappet with .496/.509 lift. I did the Crane roller rocker conversion.
When you drive the rockers will clatter at part throttle. Silent at idle and WOT; but if the engine is at "neutral throttle"; there is the clatter. I recently swapped to Scorpion rollers since I had read some folks had issues with Crane rockers. The Scorpions are obviously better built, but the clatter is still there. I'm sure of my adjustment procedure ( Exh cracked; adjust intake; intake through cycle; adjust exh.) I've even went as far as adjusting them to 5/8 turn as opposed to 1/2 turn. Anyone else have this kind of issue with roller rockers? Ideas? I'm stumped.

I presume you have fully adjustable valvetrain based on what was written, The best way to adjust hydraulic valves is with the engine running. back off the nut til you hear the tap, tighten til tap is gone then add the 1/2 turn . try that and see what happens.

Can you measure the hydraulic lifter preload, or rather the hydraulic lifter's "plunger" travel, I usually set my preload to half of this travel. The hyd flat tappet lifters I have measured on a few of my 460 rebuilds have .060-.065" plunger travel, so I select pushrods to give .030-.0325" hyd. lifter preload for positive stop rocker studs. Hope this makes sense. I find the preload by installing the pushrod, rocker and just tighten the rocker down until I can't turn the pushrod freely, I then place a metal straight edge across the valve cover "lands" and scribe the pushrod. I now tighten the rocker down until either the nut bottoms out on the stud or the valve JUST begins to open, I then make another scribe mark on the pushrod. The distance between these 2 marks is the lifter's plunger travel(I usually have to do this with no oil in the body of the lifter so I can have an accurate measurement of the plunger travel length). If you set the preload almost exactly between these 2 marks you should be good to go.

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires. No matter how good she looks, somebody, somewhere, is tired of her sh*t. Beauty is skin deep, ugliness goes clear to the bone. |

When you recheck the rockers, are they loose?
Sounds like it's a lifted issue |

Are you using press-in studs or screw-in?
Did you fill the rockers and pump them up with oil or just lube them up prior to install?

Curious. Are you using restrictor style pushrods?

That was my 2nd try at getting these rascals quiet. At idle; you only have that "sewing machine" sound that most rollers make. At WOT they are quiet...just at part throttle above 1800 rpm they clatter. They sound like solid lifters.

Screw in studs. I soaked them in new oil 3 days when I was building the motor. When I started the engine and broke in the cam, all was well. First time I drove it is when I noticed the clatter. I figured I needed to drive it more and go back to adjust the valves. I've adjusted the hot. I've adjusted them cold. I've adjusted them static, running and every other scenario I can think of.

They get better after driving for a bit; but they do not get quiet by any means.

I bought Comp Cams hardened pushrods. There are no restrictions that I can see. I washed them in brake clean, then put 120 psi of compressed air through them, put assembly lube on both balls (making sure not to block the oil passage).

Thanks for all the replies...I'm thinking my next step is to replace the lifters with a new set. The cam was used (1800 miles) and I am the one who pulled the cam and lifters. I marked each one (in its own baggie) to be sure they went in my engine exactly as they came out of the old motor (which I also built).

That's good. Mine seems quiet since I've gotten it running but the car is pretty loud with only four feet of pipe off of the manifolds. Not as bad as you might think but loud enough I wouldn't start it early or late.
