I've got the dual sport mirrors but only the driver's side is remote. Just wondering if Ford ever had Sport dual remotes on these like they did on the Pinto's? (which are a different base, darn it!)
Thanks, Russ |

Yes, Ford did offer dual Sport mirrors after 1974. I have a couple of sets. Passenger remote knob was located on the dash between the wiper and radio knobs.

You would need a 74 up dash too. Ford moved the wiper knob over a little to make room for the passenger window control.

the other issue, that is not REALLY an issue is the way the mirror is mounted.
More of an FYI and be aware that you may have to work on the mounting, EASY TO DO! Some are screwed in from inside the door up into the mirror so there are no visible screws. Some have 2 screw holes in the base so the screw goes down through the mirror in to the sheet metal of the door. Factory they had blind nuts crimped/welded in place. I actually moved my mirrors FORWARD for a better view and just used stainless sheet metal screws directly in to the sheet metal.

Thanks.
My 74 Pinto wagon has the visible screws through the base style. Otherwise I would use those. I just prefer the looks of the hidden screw style. Plus I think the Pinto ones are smaller, at least the base. Looks smaller anyway, I haven't done a close comparison yet. Russ |

the torino's 72-76 sport mirrors have the studs! the pinto's are smaller with screws, 77-79 t-birds etc have the screws.
the passenger remote mirrors aren't as common as non remote and can be $$$ and you may need to cut the hole in the door by the hinges for the cable to run (that's why i didn't add a pass. remote mirror on my car later since it was all painted and assembled) with the fender off... that would be the time to cut the hole! |

Took off my Sport mirrors and replaced them with chrome Ford manual mirrors.
Twice the visibility! Only problem is the giant cable hole in the passenger door. Cable removal... no fun at all, so I imagine it will suck to install. (You probably won't speed up the process using wirecutters on the cable for example)

On my 72 Montego, I installed a sport mirror on the my-side of the car. The remote mirrors I bought have the longer visible screw base, as opposed to the short factory chrome standard remote mirror that I removed (hell, who needs to see what's behind you anyway, right?). The front of the sport mirror lined up with the factory hole no prob, but had to use the sheet metal trick on the back side screw. The door sheet metal isn't all that thick, but the rear sheet metal screw seems fairly solid. Only time will tell on that, though. I lucked out and have a Montego with a my-side remote hole in the door panel.
Her-side will be the challenge adding a remote hole. I'm hesitant to cut a hole in the Torino Sport door panels I just put in to replace the stock factory Montego panels, or string it to the dashboard and cut a hole in that, so I was going to just cut the remote cable off. Now that John mentioned the passenger side remote is relatively rare, I'm kinda chicken to cut the cable off now. Might just wrap it as tight as possible inside the door somehow where it won't be in the way. I wonder if there's a way to detach the cable from the mirror itself? |

If you cut the cables, the mirror will flop around loose, and then the glass falls out. DON'T cut the cables on a mirror you want to use.
Passenger side cables are like 6 feet long, and go out thru the front of the door, into the doorjamb, and end up under the dash next to the wiper switch. probably a bit big to coil up inside the door.

yeah removing the passenger mirror cable through the door post and door is not fun at all. Can't tell you how many I've given up on and left the mirror hanging off the door. Ford used a rubber grommet that goes in nice when they made the cars but coming out gets hooked like a fish hook. Best advice is to cut the rubber off the cable in that area so it pulls through.

Why not sell that mirror and buy a non adjustable replacement? Should make some money on the deal.

rivnuts are not that hard to install, i like the idea of using a back-up washer behind them so include that thickness to the material range of the rivnut

I've got a set of original dual remote mirrors that are going back on my car, since a past owner removed them in favor of the chrome Ford mirrors. They have studs on them to go through the door.
As previously mentioned, the factory placement for the passenger side control knob is between the radio and the wiper. Here's a pic of my car just for reference so you can see where the later cars had it: |

Matt,
I'd offer to trade you a non remote sport passenger side for your remote, but mine is pretty floppy. But I would imaging that there are many people willing to do that. Russ |

Russ, I have another set of Sport mirrors still on my 73 Sportsroof I'm parting out, and the passenger side isn't a remote. I probably will end up selling my remote one eventually, since I really have no use for it. Sorry to the OP for kinda hijacking this, by the way.

I modified a 1972 sport mirror base, and used a damaged 1975-1976 adjustable mirror. Hardest part was removing the cable, drilling the opening in the 1972 pedestal for the sport mirror and threading the control cable then closing the locking tabs without breaking them off.
It can be done like anything else, with time, work and not trying to rush.
