Hey guys....I've found a Ranchero and just want to get some thoughts on if it's a good deal or not.

It's a 73 Ranchero GT. Says it has 44k, but that could be 144k. Not sure. The car looks very solid in pics. The bed has zero rust. The paint is shot but I'm not worried about that. Overall the car looks like a nice solid foundation for a project. Seller says it starts and runs (even though it will be getting a modern drivetrain).

Also, is there anything special about the motor? It's the 351. And what does the GT package give you?

I can get it for $2000.....

Thoughts?

In 1973 they were available with either a 351C or a 351W, there was no 351M available in 1973. Unless the previous owner installed a 351M.

Was there anything special about the cleveland in the 73 GT? Was it an HO or CJ?

There was no special '73 GT engine available because it is a GT. If it is a cleveland it might be either a 2V or 4V cobra jet.
Because it is a gt, it might also have the gran torino sport front door panels. It might also have the gt stripe kit.

1972's only got the sport hood treatment, 73 didnt have a sport hood, unless someone modified one and made a frankenhood.

I'm of the opinion with these torinos and rancheros with a solid rust free body where no rust repair is needed is worth $3-4k just for the body. Body shops that will fool with these old cars and really do those types of repairs are gettin far and few between, When they will mess with rusty cars, the costs are astronomical. Besides from my experience, no matter how much metal you replace and cut back, rust always seems to creep back. so in the end you end up with a highly polished turd. Sounds like you scored a good one at a fair price. Look forward to the pics

No pics tonight, as it was dark by the time I got back from the 6hr drive.

I'm pretty pleased with the car. Definitely has potential. It has 44k original miles. The paint is shot and there's some surface rust in places, but the car is amazingly solid. I noticed a pair of California plates on the passenger's floor...that could explain the good metal condition. It has the 400, and it started up. The interior is pretty decent too. Someone changed the hood, as it's a different color but it's a nice solid hood. You can still see the old faded GT stripes on the side of the body.

Not sure what direction I want to go with it. Right now, I'm thinking lowered, stain black, and dull bushed metal finish on all the trim, grille, and headlight bezels. But that could change. lol
