Guys, hope to be lighting off my 460 in a few weeks and I have an old distributor that I want to break down and use as a oil pump primer. Anyone ever made a priming tool form an old 460 distributor? Any tricks and suggestions on how to proceed?
THANKS IN ADVANCE

I did the same thing with an old 460 points distributor. Just use a punch/drift to drive the pin that holds the cam gear in place(remove gear) and install like regular distributor. I cannot remember the size of the socket I used to turn the shaft, it was a deep dwell 1/2" drive, used both a socket wrench(while on the engine stand) and a cordless drill with a 1/2" socket adapter)once engine installed prior to "real" distributor installation. Make sure you upgrade the oil pump drive shaft to a Ford Motorsport unit AND do not forget to install the collar that keeps the oil pump drive shaft "in place" if ever you remove the distributor. Good luck.

Do you need the distributor? I know that you do with a chevy, because the distributor body routes oil around it from somewhere to somewhere and it won't prime properly. Ford smallblocks don't need the distributor, but IDK about 460.

Really don't know if the entire distributor is necessary or not but I have an old one on hand so I figured I was part of the way there.....
CJ, aren't the teeth pinned to the shaft?

all you need is a speed handle, 3/8" extension, 1/4" adapter & a 5/16" socket
crank the oil pump drive shaft counter clockwise with the speed handle tool turn the crank bolt 90*, oil some more repeat until you have oil flowing at each rocker
