Exactly, Not that you can't make any one of them work.it's sure easier to get the correct one.

I know thats why I asked. I have no idea. I have the c4 out of a 77 400.Traded the aod for a rebuilt ? 400 2yrs ago. though I would go with the c4 have a 164 or63 tooth flex plate .my motor is a 74 falcon. This is the one thing I never liked about ford. Why so many choices.

the bell has to match the car as much as the engine/trans, little things like the bosses to mount the bracket for the column shift cable are a big deal if you need them and they're not there
and a 6 cylinder bell will mount the starter in a bad place for a V-8 Disapprove

small flex is 157 tooth, large flex is 164 tooth

i forget which but one bell mounts using the pump bolts and the other has it's own bolts around the outside of the pump, and IIRC the small flex trans has the dip tube going into the top of the case (case fill) and the large flex has the dip tube going into the side of the pan (pan fill)

Right. the one for mustang 2 is the small flex plate. My trans is a pan dip stick which could cause problems. Starter location and bolt pattern also come into play Here is were I don't care for fords.

Pinto / M-II is a completely different animal, way smaller than 157 tooth

135? i thought it was 14x something but it's small and the bell needs to match the tooth count or the starter will never touch the ring gear

ilyes had one in his old Torino maybe he can shed some light, or pull up his old project thread. aftermarket may be the way to go on this one, i believe I've heard of hybrid bells that attach to the pump bolts on pan fill cases. will a 157 tooth bell even fit in the stock tunnel?

You are correct. It had a 302 with AOD. I did not think when I gave away the trans for a 400 motor I would have so many questions going to a c4. I do have a 89 300 van w AOD but it seems only up to 87 will fit a 302. Should have left well enough alone.

you wouldn't want to put a 6 cyl AOD behind a V-8, smaller clutch packs they don't hold up long term

back to basics, what year 302 in what year / what car?

engine year (specifically the crank shaft) determines flex plate balance weight, 50 vs 28 oz

if you have a pan-fill, best answer is get another transmission. As far as I remember, those are all the large flywheel and use a different bell than case-fill.
Pan-fills are bulkier and have odd parts sticking out in stupid places.
A small bell case-fill will fit in a pinto with some love from a sledgehammer. There is a raised seam at firewall-to-trans tunnel that will need to be flattened, and some small contact areas will need love as well.

The motor is a 74 car is a pinto floor shift. I had a AOD in it so the fire wall was worked over.

My first torino had an original c4 with a 302 that came stock. If I recall, it had a 157 tooth flexplate

For V8s, 157 is the "small" flywheel, 164 is "large"
Mustang II was smaller than "small".
