I am not a body many or painter by any stretch, but I try my best. My daily driver truck has a small spot that I need to touch up, about the size of a dime. I tried to use a spray can to do it, and it just looks bad. So I was thinking of buying an airbrush and trying to learn to use one? It seems like with some practice I might get some good results. Any one here use an airbrush? What is a good brand/make to buy? How much do you need to thin the paint? Can you spray clear with them? Any advice is appreciated.

i do, but i'm not an artist! (some people seem to think i am) i have a badger 150, a cheap knock off of the badger, and my favorite.. an iwata air brush the iwata is awesome! i can't remember the model off the top of my head... i can check later.
yes you need to thin the paint a little more yes you can spray clear through it , just thin a little more and i have a sata mini gun that's great for touch up!!! it's about half way between a paint gun and an airbrush |

With practice, they work good,
You can mask right on the edge of a stone chip and fill/paint without major blending. |

Thanks guys, maybe I will give it a shot.
I assume you just use reducer as you would for a normal paint gun to thin it out? I read some stuff online where guys were using lacquer thinner?

you could use a normal compressor, but you will really have to choke the air pressure and volume down.
You can get small air pumps that will work easier/simpler. As far as reduction, use whatever is correct for the paint. Some things may not be compatible with the chemistry of the paint. If you are just using the little touch-up bottle paints, and shooting that thru the airbrush, I would check with the manufacturer for what they recommend.

Thanks Randy! I do have a small 8 gallon compressor besides my big one. I just didn't want to buy another little compressor when I already have a couple. I'd probably just get a paint shop to mix up a small can of paint. I will just used what ever they recommend as a reducer then.
