A little cool trivia about the Ranchero and Wagons. 1972 and most of '73 versions of the taillights had a red painted inset on the taillight bezels. I remember my Mom's wagon having the red many years ago, but almost all have faded now or been painted black. Both of my '72 wagons have small amounts of the red left, if you look carefully. After '73, Ford painted them black.
Here is an NOS unit I picked up about 8 months ago in a shed of parts I bought. Still with the box and unopened packet of mounting screws. |

The guy had a dent and rust-free '72 GTS hood in original paint, several intakes, fender corners, grills, nose moldings, wheels and tires, and all kinds of neat and unusual items. He stored them for decades, never telling anyone he had them except 1 person. I stumbled onto it by complete accident.

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires. No matter how good she looks, somebody, somewhere, is tired of her sh*t. Beauty is skin deep, ugliness goes clear to the bone. |

That's neat. I just looked at my Ranchero....I'm guessing my red has faded because it's just dull silver there, even though the black outer painted trim is still very much there.

Todd, if you are interested, make me an offer.
Sal, look up under the inset area on your bezel where the sun and rain don't get to it as easily. There may be a small amount of the red left there. |

The red paint on the 72-73 bezels is quite fascinating.
Here is a pic of an NOS assembly, to show what it looks like: Here is a pic of an original that still retains a small amount of the red paint: Here are the part numbers: Bezel only Left: D2OZ-13489-B Right: D2OZ-13489-A ---------------------------------------- Assembly (does NOT include the gasket) Left: D2OZ-13404-A Right: D2OZ-13404-B ---------------------------------------- I can vaguely remember washing my 73 Ranchero GT 20 years ago and the last of that red paint came off on a towel. At the time, I had no idea that it was factory paint. Sold the 'Chero, but I will definitely be on the lookout for that paint on any 72-73 'Chero or wagon in the future. |

Yup, my ‘73 has a little red left even after a couple of recent washes. I’ll be mindful of it from here on out.

All you wagon owners would sure hold a deep place in my butt if you had a donor car gas fill door assembly that you weren't going to use and sell to me at a ridiculous price... Sorry off topic, I recently relocated the gas fill on my 75 Ranchero to the inside of the bed, and while not as functional as I'd like (I still have to hold the spigot into the hole), it's better than it was, and gas doesn't go dribbling down the side if I ever paint it. I'll look into posting the pics again, it used to be pretty easy from photobucket...
