Hello. Was hoping someone else out there has done a trunk and quarter end swap from a gt car to a sport roof car.if it works and how much is involved? Only if I had two cars to check this out before I go and buy a trunk and quarter end.

That would be a lot of work in my opinion. All of the entire glass on the formal roof cars are different than on the fastback cars. The front windshield and A pillars on the fastback cars are different than on the formal roof cars.

The roofs, quarter panels and trunk lids are different also. You would probably have drill out the spot welds at the lower portion of the A pillars at the cowl on the fastback car, and then weld them onto the formal roof car to make everything fit correctly.

The 1971 is a unibody car, there is no chassis/frame. The A pillars, roof, trunk and quarter panels are all portions of the frame/chassis of the car. If you remove them from the car, you will have to use special support bracings on the two cars during the project, or the cars might fold in half.

I do not know if the lower quarter panels are different between the formal roof and fastback cars, but they probably are. I heard someone say that they are different. Maybe one of the other members will know.

The yellow dotted line in the picture below is the trim line of the car, the formal roof cars appear to have different lower quarter panels than the fastback cars.

You might have to cut the entire roof, the a pillars and the upper quarter panels off of the fastback car and weld them onto the formal roof car in order to do this project correct, such as in the picture below. I do not believe that there will be any other way that you could possibly do it. If you try to do it a different way it could be a lot of extra work to make everything fit correctly.

idk but the A pillars are the same on mustangs fastback to coupe, 72-73 torinos are the same fastback to formal as far as the A pillars go, wonder why the 71's wouldn't be the same?

I have always thought that the A pillars and windshields were different between '70 and '71 formal roof torinos and '70 and 71 fastback torinos. The lower quarter panels appear to be the same though.

There is a picture below of a '70 through '71 torino windshield for a 2 door coupe with a formal roof, 4 door sedan, station wagon and convertible.

The hardtop is a '70 through '71 fastback torino, but it is not a GT. It was designed for people who wanted a fastback car without the GT option. The GT option cost more money too. A few people have turned the hardtop cars into GT cars such as a clone and/or a tribute car. It would probably be easier to find a hardtop car and turn it into a gt than it would be to turn a formal roof torino into a fastback.

Hey thanks guys for all the info I understand all what your saying I agree with just starting with the gt car for the roof line and quarters. I just thought a guy could maybe bolt the truck and quarter ends on and get the flare at the rear end is what I wanted the most.but it don't sound like they will. I may have to fab it up.

Stick with the "Formal", they look better than the GT Fastback.
And if you find a "Post" car (Falcon) GRAB IT!!! Vent windows!!!

Johnny,
Had always heard that 60s Mustangs had different windshields/A pillars between coupes and fastbacks...

The 1967 and 1968 mustang formal roofs/coupes and fastbacks use the same A pillars, front windshields and front windshield frames.

i think he just want to do the truck and end caps on a coupe.i had a buddy that did that back in the 90s.it lined up ok.it was not a 100% but did not look bad.there is some misalignment with it. the trunk will bolt into your car.im trying some thing like that with a car now...

well it been a bit of time. So I went and got  a trunk and quarter ends and they do bolt up. But would be some work to make the body lines line up on the quarter ends to panels.so I went a got a striped fastback. I will strip my formal roof and build the fast back.
