I still have the original factory 429 block in my 72 GTS. I bought the chrome "Cobra Jet" letters usually found on Mustang Shakers at a car show and I put them on each side of my GTS hood scoop. I have to say they look like they belong on this car.
I've added many Cobra Jet parts and performance parts that exceed the specs of the factory CJ & SCJ engines. How many CJ parts do I have to add to truly earn the right to call my car a Cobra Jet?

Well if you've got a 429, then you're not "cloning" anything, since that year didn't come with a 429 CJ.

You could legitimately put some Cobra Jet badges on if you've got a Cobra Jet of any kind under the hood. Since the main thing that made a CJ a CJ was the heads, I would say if you've got 429 CJ or SCJ heads on your stock 429, then you can call it a Cobra Jet. Otherwise, it ain't no Cobra Jet.

Just my 2 cents.

on the other hand many say 'never say never' with Ford, why not a 1972 429CJ ?

wiki says 370hp=CJ and 375hp=SCJ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_385_engine

370hp CJ came with a Ford Rochester carb, good luck finding that and the original intake Confused
carb intake cam & headers can be excused over this amount of time, back in the day lots of owners pitched the original parts to the bin, today they're worth gold

why not a 1972 C code? it'd sure be rare because Ford discontinued factory installed Ram Air on the 351's mid-production, what did they do to the 429's?

Thanks for your 2 cents. Thinking on the same line, I swapped the old smog 429 4V cast iron heads for the Aluminum CJ heads from Ford Motorsport SVO. The first thing you see when the hood is lifted up is the words "Cobra Jet" on the front face of each head.
So the only engine parts from Ford is the block, truck 460 rods , crank & CJ Alum. heads.
My block is a Thunder Jet series casting, so I think the word "JET" is legit.
I studied the performance of every factory part offered in a 429CJ car, and from there I chose parts that offered substantially higher HP numbers from the aftermarket companies.
A 351CJ 72 GTS on a good day might get into the 14's in the 1/4 mile.
My CJ combination does mid 11's, so does that earn me the right to use the word "Cobra Jet" on my hood?

i wouldn't worry about it! there was some discussion a while back on a facebook page about clones...and how it's wrong...ETC.
it's your car do what you want to it!! Wink
the only time it's wrong to pass off a clone is if you're selling it and trying to claim it's something special and original, and trying to get big$$$ for something that isn't!

I'd love to see a factory 429 police interceptor in a 72 and then the later 73/74 460 police interceptors, basically they are jr cobra jet big blocks. Bump the compression a bit and the 460 PI would probably outrun the 429 cj's and scj's

There was only enough meet in my 72 429 block walls to go 0.060" overbore which I did. I swapped the 429 crank for a 460 crank with 460 truck rods to max out to 472 cu. in.
I've been fighting the urge to bump up the compression from 8:1 because I love the fact that my engine is pushing over 500hp using only 87 octane pump gas.
The new cams from Comp Cams are designed with lower octane in mind. I installed their 294S-10 solid lifter (Part# 34-342-4) and I never imagined that it would add almost 75 HP over the 280H I was running.
Best $200 I ever spent.
