    Posted: 06-September-2017 at 5:07AM
Hey guys,

So, one of the multiple problems my 1971 Torino has is the power steering hoses leak.  Now, please forgive me, but I'm no mechanic.  I learn as I go, and will do my best to explain.

I have included a picture.  As you can see, these hoses are pretty much toast.  My question is, which hoses do I get?  I found this after a Google search:

http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/DC/15304-05033773.html?utm_content=DN&utm_term=1968-1971+Ford+Torino+Power+Steering+Cylinder+Hose+Edelmann+Cylinder+68-71+Ford+Power+Steering+Cylinder+Hose+1970+1969&utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base&gclid=Cj0KCQjwub7NBRDJARIsAP7wlT9k4m9Yjfv8o_fonThAAugEFre_h6WKawyrfFHBNHpTsZi-rL6cI5oaAoKTEALw_wcB&ad=47362750812

Now, I know there are two, so do I order the same one twice, or are there two different hoses?  This is probably a basic question to some, and I feel stupid for asking, but I simply don't know, so hopefully you guys can help me.

Thank you!

There should be four hoses total.  In the photo it looks like you are focused on the lines that run from the control valve to the cylinder.  In that case, yes, order two identical lines.  Rock Auto has several:

There will also be two other lines from the pump to the control valve.  A pressure line and a return line.  If there are leaking too, RockAuto has them too.

make sure you replace the lines one at a time. It will not be a happy day if you reverse the hoses on the ram.

Thank you both for the help! Yes, I am only focusing on those two at the moment as those seem to be the main issue. As for replacing them, my mechanic owes me a favor, so I'm going to have him do it. However, he also told me I need to get a kit and not just two of the same ones, so.... I hope he doesn't do something like pop off a fuel line instead. Haha.

Are you sure the hoses are the leak source???
The control valve is the usual source of leaks in the ram-assist power steering.
It runs down the hoses and makes a mess of everything.

I'm not actually 100% sure on that.  Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Yeah randy has a good point there, it could be, my vette has that style system, mine was good so i rebuilt the cylinder, now a couple years later it leaks under there, I'll have to find out what's going on with it

Alright... While I can't say the control valve isn't assisting in a leak, it is indeed the hoses.  They are cracked pretty bad.  I order two identical hoses as mentioned above.  One simply will NOT fit (the "lower" one/one to the front of the control valve).

I can't get it to bend the way I need it to.  While the rubber flexes as it should, the metal hose at the ends are too long and make it impossible to articulate the hose the way I need it to.  Any ideas?  Is there a different hose I could get?

Thanks guys.

Turn the steering wheel. Control valve is on the end of the steering linkage and moves with the steering.

I didn't think about that, but the way the bends are in the metal parts of the hoses, it seems like something would get damaged even if I do manage to get it to fit that way.

If you have both old hoses off now, did you compare the new hose to the old ones?  Like I said, the parts shops only show one hose from the control valve to the cylinder, so it should fit.  Some aftermarket parts may not be identical to OEM, which may be the cause them to not fit as well.  You could always try bringing the old hose to a parts store and see if they can help you.

Otherwise, I agree with Randy's advice.

Well, I put the old one back on. The biggest thing is the length of the metal parts of the hose after the rubber. Those are much longer than the original, and they obviously don't bend. I will give Randy's suggestion a try.

Thanks for all your help so far guys. You're all making my Torino (and first old car) experience much easier.
