Hi all, just  wondering, I'm going to do an engine rebuild and I want to know can I put the pistons, connecting rods, cam, and crank from a 1968 into my 1973 to give it the horsepower of the 1968? Grandpops4.

possibly
a couple things come to mind ...volume of the combustion chambers in the heads, and cam timing in relation to the crank? as later engines got a drop in power due to emissions b.s. just stuff to keep in mind
others here may have a more definite answer for you...

As John mentioned lots of variables went into making the '71 and later BBF's a bit on the lazy side.
'68-429's had: 10.3" to 10.310" block deck height, 10.5 to 1 compression, DOVE-C 75 cc closed chamber cylinder heads, "usually" no thermactor bump that is drilled/ported and a bit better exhaust port than the D3's, 1.75-1 rocker ratio=a bit more lift/duration but were a rail design, pistons that were basically a flat top with an intake valve relief, timing set that had cam timing at "0".

The '73 429 had: 10.322" block deck height, 8.5 to 1 compression ratio, D3VE-A2A 96cc cylinder heads, thermactor bumps in exhaust ports drilled/ported, EGR ports on end of heads(actually drilled the entire length of head) requiring welch plugs to seal off, 1.73 rocker ratio-sled fulcrum, dish pistons with about 22cc +/- volume, cam timing retarded 8 degrees measured at crank.

May have left a couple things out, but you can see the later BBF's were "handicapped" quit a bit.

BBF cylinder head info

On a side note, install a 460 crank and pistons for an easy 31 cubic inch increase, 460 pistons are MUCH easier to find in different specs to fit your needs. Example: use 88-92 EFI 460 pistons on your rods for an increase in compression height & less dish which in turn increases compression ratio and decreases quench which helps with pump gas detonation issues and these pistons use a standard style ring package whereas the later 460's used a metric ring package which was much more expensive. Hope this helps.

Yeah, It's a Hybrid...It burns gas and tires.

Thank you guys for the kind words! I always try to help if I possibly can. I try to reciprocate the same type of selfless help that members here have so graciously afforded me over the years, here's to our continued success at helping one another Beer(my mug has A&W Root beer-no alcohol for me, my  belligerent button is quite touchy as it is) Embarrassed.
