The easiest way to tell engine families apart is by counting the valve cover bolts.  The Windsor family (289, 302, 351W, to name a few) has six bolts, the 335-series (351C, 351M, 400) has eight, and the 385-series (370, 429, 460) has seven.

Now, if you're asking how to tell a 429 from a 460, the easiest way I know of is to check the crankshaft...externally, there are no differences.

The Vin number should be stamped in the rear of the drivers side of the block clost to the firewall. It might not be possible to see it with the engine in the car.

The valve covers are different, I believe the 429 has 7 mounting holes  460 has 6.
When in doubt, whip it out
