No the carpet I pulled out of my car had full length vinyl inserts (from pedals to seat) on both sides. I imagine it was installed when they redid the seats but they did a poor job of trimming it at the C pillars.

Yes, you can still get them from ACC. I can't remember what transmission/shifter your car has?  The full length inserts were used on the 1972-73 GTS cars.  Here is a photo of a repro:

If you car is a floor shift auto or a 4-speed, you need to order the 4-speed carpet to have the molded section for the floor shifter.  This is part number 17891 for a black 4-speed carpet with the full length inserts.

If you have a column shift car, then you can just order it off the shelf.  It's part number 19474 (for black).

Some on here have said you can use a carpet without the molded hump on a floor shifter car, but it requires some trimming.

That's the carpet Vince! Mine is a 4 speed car.
I wonder how much of a pain in the ass that Essex material in black would be to keep clean.
