Anyone have a good procedure for replacing the oil pan gasket. Got under it today and couldn't reach all of the bolts with the Frame right below the middle of the pan. I'm sure I could get it out by removing the fan shroud and a couple of tubes and but I can't get to some of the bolts.

Help

P.S. for whoever asked. I am in Maricopa, AZ. About 20 minutes south of Phoenix west of the I10.

If you don't have room to scrape the old one off of the pan and block, I would just remove the fan shroud and motor mount bolts. Then carefully jack the engine up enough to put some hardwood spacers between the frame and motor mounts. There should be enough room. And you may need to customize a 7/16 socket and combo wrench. We had to make tools work quite often at Aamco and sometimes all the bolts never made it back into those areas. I wouldn't advise leaving out any pan bolts.

And like valve covers, a ball peen hammer was handy when it came to putting a little low spot on the mating surface for extra "pull" when tightening the pan or cover down.

I realize the hammer won't work in this case but is something to keep in mind for
another day. Are the gaskets still cork? Haven't put a pan on since 1981.

Fan shroud out.
Raise engine until it hits tunnel.
shim at mounts to support
remove starter
unbolt pan and drop to crossmember
unbolt oil pickup, drop into pan
weasel pan past crank throws
remove old gaskets and clean flanges
put pan back under engine
reinstall pickup
attach pan gasket to pan flange with dental floss thru holes
start all pan bolts
remove dental floss
tighten bolts
reinstall starter and lower engine
fill engine with oil (Very important)

Excellent! Hope I never have to do it.

And you have the added bonus of being able to tap each hole down with a ball peen.

i'd find a way to snug it down with 1/4" drive and extensions  / universals before doing it in the car

remove the engine mount bolts and lift it up if you have to, pulling the motor out and doing a complete re-seal is the Easy Way

because you won't be chasing the next leak in the car next week

heck i'd break the engine down and do the head gaskets valve stem seals, freeze plugs, timing set & front trans seal ...

then re-assemble with a complete gasket set

take the fix or repair daily out of owning a Ford ;)
