Ok, got the Cougar 2 months ago, when I gave it a quick once-over, I saw on the emissions label on the left valve cover that it was a 351...part of the 351M/400 engine family....which is fine.  Using my new parts catalog today, I was doing some more decoding of things, and realized the 5th digit of the vin is an H, which, according to EVERYTHING I've read, denotes a 351W...BUT...according to the tag on the right valve cover (which, amazingly was still legible) it is a 351M, along with the fact that it has 4 bolts at the bottom of the valve covers, and the t-chain cover is part of the block, not bolted to it confirms it's a 351M.  I'm guessing it may have been replaced at some point, but the car was built on April 24, 1978, and the engine was built on April 17th...I wonder what the odds are of it getting an incorrect engine out of the box, or maybe someone out there has seen this before??  VIN is 8H93Hxxxxxx....tag#'s on the valve cover are JJ548BE.....might be time for a Marti Report....

H can be either a 351m/2v or a 351w/2v, has always been that way UNLESS it was a 4 bbl engine, then it got either a M (older 69-71 torinos) or a q code (our era cars).

gotcha....like I said, I knew what was there, didn't understand why.....seems odd that Ford wouldn't make that a VIN-specific choice....

Ford has done some odd things over the years from what i have learned. some very strange things happened on the line back in the 60's and 70's, it was the sex/drugs/rock n roll era after all. Just talked to a guy who bought a new 67 fairlane with a 390 2v. he went to get the motor rebuilt a few years ago and turns out it was a 428, now how in the heck did that happen?

no, it was a honest to goodness 428 where a 390 should have been.
