When I started restoring my car, I removed the bump stops above the rear axle. How in the world do you install new ones? Any ideas?

not sure on the 70/71's, i'm assuming they are similar to the 72-76 torinos? if they go into a slot usually they are pulled in with pliers, if you can't access the back side then you would need to gently work them in with a blunt screwdriver, wd40 or dish soap will help them to slide in Wink

In case anyone sees this, I figured it out quite easily. Just head the bump stops up with a heat gun and they pop right in.

If you're talking about the '72+, they bolt onto the frame with two bolts. I have an available pair, I believe. I'll look tomorrow.

Thanks for posting a follow-up.  This is really helpful for people who have the same problem and search the forums later.

I'm assuming that you mean the part attached to the frame above the axle. I always knew them as the "snubber", and there's three -- the two axle-to-frame snubbers and the pinion-to- frame snubber.

I'll be out there to dig them out in a little bit.

Yup, I have the pair of axle snubbers. I also have a pair from a '72 Mark IV. The bolt holes are the same spacing.... the snubbers are just a bit narrower, and about 3/4" less tall.

When I was in school, I worked at Stop&Shop which was across the railroad tracks near my house. Used to find bump stops every day left by people not slowing down on the crossing. 😄

Yep, the snubbers. On the 71, they did not bolt on, they just slid in. Looked on the internet for hours before realizing that rubber shrinks when heated.

So, you're looking for '71 then? I didn't see that in your first post

Old post I know but I thought Id ask before creating a new one :-)
Id like to extend the snubbers on my 70 GT at least an inch to give myself more clearance with the 9" diff.
What would you all suggest?
I can drill tap and bolt a plate on but are there any simpler solutions like bigger snubbers that fit the same slot?
Cheers

If you extend them, you give yourself LESS clearance.
You want to SHORTEN them to give more clearance.
Cut off rubber to increase available travel space.

I don’t know why you’d want to do that, though.... you’re gonna risk jamming and damaging things at one or both ends of the driveshaft.

Maybe you’re  talking about a different part??

Yes, I want less clearance so the axle does not travel up as far to give the 9" diff more clearance between it and the floor.
So I need to lengthen the axle snubbers so it cant travel up as far.
