I am replacing the original Motorcraft three post solenoid (D2SF-11450-AB) with
a four post Motorcraft (D2AF-11450-AA). I am running a Pertronix Ignitor 2 and Flamethrower coil...so I also have the Pertronix bypass relay for the resistor in my original ignition wiring installed. Right now both the bypass relay and the connection from the ignition are wired to the third post on solenoid. With the new four post, would I relocate the bypass wire to the "I" side of the solenoid? I would appreciate any input, just making sure I don't hose anything up. Is this solenoid a suitable replacement for the OEM? 1972 Montego GT, 351 CJ Thanks, Billy

My car had a four post solenoid on it. When I wired up my relay for my Pertronix ignition, I just power the relay from the positive battery connection side with a fuse. The trigger for the relay was the coil wire (through the resistor wire). It worked fine for me and I use it to power my electric choke too. I am switching to a HEI style ignition and I will use the relay in the same fashion to ensure it and the coil get 12 volts.

I guess my next question is did Ford make car model / engine specific solenoids in 1972? I have a new (repro) Motorcraft solenoid and it was listed for a 72 full size Ford. Can't remember what engine size....didn't really know if I could use it on my intermediate with the Q code engine. Sorry for all the questions, thanks

most were the same for many years only difference were 4 terminal and 3 terminal
if you had a 3 term. you can replace it with a 4 but not the other way around |

Like John said, they weren't model specific. The aftermarket replacement ones cover a huge number or years and models.
