Hello all,
My fuel pump went out and I ordered a new one for my 351W. The part came and when I went to install it I discovered it did not fit. What I found was a fuel pump for a 351C or a 351M. Not sure which. My info all tells me 351W. Clearly I am very wrong. I have checked the data plate and motor but I am still not sure. Can any one please help with this question.

been there done that 38 years ago, 3 trips back to the parts storeConfused
windsor will have the bolts side by side horizontally
cleveland and modified will have the bolts top and bottom vertically
i can't remember what the difference between them was ...something about the arm???
or are you unsure about what engine you have?

VIN code H can be either a 351Windsor, 351Cleveland or 351M

Windsor has horizontal bolts, attaches to alloy timing cover

Cleveland and 351M have vertical bolts, same pump, attaches to cast iron block

you get the right arm when you get the right bolts

As the other's have said, Cleveland and M are vertical bolts pattern, Windsor is horizontal.

You can see the differences here, both are available.

Thanks for the feed back, they are vertical so it's either C or M. Is there much of a difference, which engine is better? May not matter

Your car is a '73, so that'd be a 351C (351M didn't come out until 1975).  In stock form, both were rated pretty much the same. Asking which one is better a bit of a loaded question.  I think the Cleveland is the better of the two engines (just my opinion), but parts are getting harder to come, and there is a lot more aftermarket support for 351W's these days.

I've had M's in pickups, and they were pretty lazy in factory trim. 400 was always better in that role and I am putting one together for a 78 F150 project.  As to difference between the W and C, Vince is right on. Build the one you have, run it and have fun!

Agreed… But 351M is more of a utilitarian/land yacht/truck engine

the 351M was a gutless wonder from the day it was born, due to the factory state of tune

what i don't understand is, in some circles the longest connecting rod you can get is the Big Go,

here's a long rod motor that nobody ever loved .... why not?

FYI the 351M shares the exact same block and connecting rods as the 400, just swap the 1K (351M crankshaft cast code) for the 5M (400 crankshaft cast code) and assemble using pistons to suit. stock 400 and 351C use a ~ 1.647" compression distance, but different pin diameters. the rod can be bushed and/or offset to correct compression distance to a very favorable 1.710", or just source pistons from Tim Meyer that get the job done in 1 smack

https://www.tmeyerinc.com/product/piston-set-ford-400/

"

The 2347 is a hyper-eutectic piston with a .975″ wrist pin and will replace the original 400 Ford piston.

Pistons have a 13.3cc step dish and will yield about 9.3:1 Compression ratio based on a 76cc combustion chamber.

1.710″ Compression height will give a near perfect “0” deck height. "

unfortunately for $ reasons these are hypereutectic alloy, for serious performance builds a forged 2032 or 2618 alloy piston should be used and for good reason, a 400 short block with 4V heads can make into the high 700-800 hp zone ... fairly easy Shocked

To all,
Thanks again. I am a grammar school student at this but will get better. I plan to make my Torino breath fire but money is the key. Just for a bit of history, I just got passed over for Sergeant Major in the Army so my career may end a little sooner than I thought. As I review what I want to do next, rather than work on more college, (ie, Master's Degree) I am going to take college classes on auto mechanics and welding. Once I hang up the uniform I hope to build fast cars. Again all of you have been very helpful and as my Torino improves I will keep you posted. Have a great Sunday.
Mark
