Hello all!  So, my shifter linkage bushing crumpled away recently (1971 302 auto), and when I replaced it, I found myself having to bash the shifter to get it into park, and if idling in park, it may throw itself into reverse. That's been fun, and expensive... Anyway, I think it may be because further up, this joint is out of this post. I can't seem to retract rod back enough to get it back over this post. Any ideas? I'm not a mechanic... I learn as I go. Thanks!

(For some reason, the picture rotated itself 90 degrees, but the left is the top of the car.)

There's a group on Facebook that got back to me, and they said I have to disconnect the rod from the block.  They also seemed a little concerned that that should happen.  They also suggested checking the engine mount because that's not normal.  The car has been falling apart.  Lol.  The mount is there.

I've done this kind of stuff on GM's, and you usually unbolt the frame side of the z-bar from the bracket, slip the z-bar back over the engine post, then bolt it back into the frame bracket.  I had a similar incident with a '73 Olds Omega(Rocket 350/4bbl/4spd.).  The motor mount didn't look broke, until I jacked up the motor a bit.  Part of the mount went with the engine, the rest stayed bolted to the subframe...Shocked

looks like column shift linkage? you should be able to disconnect part of it to get it back where it goes then adjust it down below by the tranny i believe?
