Hello All!

This is Mike from West Virginia and I just joined the forum.
Today I receive delivery of my 79 LTD II S, which I plan to restore and customize.

My 1st car was a white 77 LTD II S with the red stripe and sport pkg., and always
wanted to re-buy one and do all the things I didn't have the time, or money to do
with the car back in the 70's!

I've been restoring, rebuilding, customizing, and repairing cars and boats for 45 years,
and look forward to yet another fun project.

Beyond the LTD II I have a customized 2011 Mustang GT (www.mkpony.com), and a 77 Corvette
that I've owned since 1984 and I'm in the middle of my 3rd resto/rebuild/customization (www.eparmo.com). In the past I had a 1970 GTO Judge, 69 Firebird convertible, and Jag XJS,
I had restored, but they've had to be sold Cry (Now I'm divorced and can restock my collection! Wink)

I'm sure I'm going to have a hard time finding parts, and modern upgrade parts for steering, suspension, brakes, electronics/control systems, etc. and hope the folks here can help me on
those topics!

I look forward to working with you all, and hopefully I'm able to lend help to you where I can with
some of the experience I've gained over the years!

Cheers!

Mike

Good morning and welcome.
 Half of the fun is looking for parts or fabricating your own. Enjoy your ride.

Welcome! Parts for the land yachts aren't TOO bad, Other than model-specific stuff.  I may have a '79 parts car coming up soon, if I do I'll list any spares.

I had a Corvette as well, '76 L-82 4spd Stingray...Maybe we should form a support group?LOL

Welcome to the forum! I have upgrade you to a full member, so you can upload pictures. We would love to see your LTD II.

There is tons of threads here on suspension upgrades, steering box upgrades and brake upgrades. Check some of the stickies in th 72-76 section and the Technical articles section.

Thank You All! For the warm welcome!
The LTD II finally arrived at around 8:30pm this evening,
and was in WAY worse shape than I expected!

We couldn't even drive it off the transport!
The interior was a wreck, compared to the posted photos.

I gave a scan to the body with a flashlight, and it didn't seem
abysmal, but the light of day and a magnet will tell the story.

I'll take a slug of photos and post them. I think I have my work cut out!

Till Then..

Mike

Thanks!

The front and rear quarters seem solid. The doors and rear seem to have bondo.
I need to yank the carpet, or get it up on the lift to check the floors, but they seem
solid so far, just from the "thump test".

I'll know more this weekend once I start to dig in.
I think the next step is to gut the interior, and soda blast it so I can get a better feel for
how much work there really is.

Anyone have experience in dropping a 5.0 Coyote and associate transmission into
one of these??

Haven't done that yet.  My dad's '46 has a 4.6 SOHC in it, and I can tell you the good;

-Great mileage
-Great performance
-Parts availability for maintenance/performance.

...And the bad;

-Electronics can shut you down anywhere for no apparent reason
-Tight fit(engine and trans are both much larger than your stock pieces)
-Price of parts, both engine itself and custom mounts/throttle/driveshaft/etc.

Whatever you decide to do, plan it out thoroughly, spare no expense, and enjoy the ride!Thumbs UpBig smile

I found someone who will sell a low mileage, late model, 5.0, out of a Tang that will literally run on the stand with all the electronics, wires, and even mounting HW, for a very decent price.

I'm just wondering how bad the engine mounting, Xmission fit, driveshaft redo, etc. might be...
Obviously there's the gas tank redo/replumb for FI and the electric pump. 02 sensors and exhaust swap.

If one fits under my tiny tang hood, it will physically fit in the LTD II. I just wonder how much, if any chop & relo, for the motor mounts and Xmission is involved... Well and maybe the headers.. I'm sure a custom drive shaft is needed, that's a given.

I've been doing a ton of looking on the inter-tubes over the last week and it's amazing how much 70's fords are just NOT a topic.

Cheers all!

Mike

Yeah, disco era mid-size gets NO love!LOL

Don't be fooled by the "tiny" Mustang profile-the 4.6 is as big as a 427 FE big block dimensionally.  We originally were gonna put the one we have in a '63 T-bird.  It went shock tower to shock tower, and the oil pan was too big to clear the front cross member.  It stuck up about 2 inches above the hoodline at the intake.  And from what I've seen online, the Coyote is dimensionally similar to the 4.6.  But if(when?) you decide to do it, post pictures-I've still got a 4.6 DOHC from a Lincoln Mark VIII sitting at my shop.Evil SmileBig smile

Looks like a great car for a project.  We had someone here start a Coyote swap, but he didn't finish.  You can see it here:

Gonna kinda' jump around on the list a little.  One of the members here(aquartlow)did an excellent post about stepping up to the late-model Crown Vic 4 wheel disc braking system, full step-by-step.  Found here;

Suspension, there are lots of parts available, although no one I've seen list a complete kit(anybody else feel free to list one, PLEASEBig smile), but suspension components are available;

I know the listings are for Torino/Thunderbird and the like, but the parts do interchange.

You already know about the post concerning the Coyote swap, which has Me lookin' at the 4.6 DOHC in the corner of My shop againEvil Smile, and as for the body, I'd go old-school NASCAR or factory fresh, either one works.

If Your restoring the interior, stuff pops up on Ebay once in a while, and some of the guys here have stuff you may need(myself included).  Save your search on Ebay and receive alerts when part are posted.

Finally, a question.  Why would You go to another forum?  the Lunatics here are a one-stop shop for most any information, parts and help You'll ever need.  Incredible group here, glad to be a part.

Good Luck! Thumbs UpBig smile

John,

Thanks for the info. download! Need to look through it all.
I have a whole custom concept for the interior, so we'll see where that goes.

I'm a newbi here, so I didn't know the protocol. I'll just stay here with this thread then!

Thanks!

Hey Mike, CJ is right, a build thread in the project forum is the best spot.  That way we can follow along and see the build as it progresses.  The welcome mat is really just for a quick intro.
I moved your post and added photos to start a project thread for you here:

I just called in Mike's 1979 LTDII.  You can edit the post and the title to whatever you like.

If you have specific questions about things, just pick the best sub forum to ask the question. No problem if you pick the wrong spot, I will move it the proper spot afterwards.

Hi Folks,

Vince was nice enough to open a project and move things here:

Come on over, and follow along if you like as I post updates!
