Hi All,
I have attached a picture of my air cleaner with this sensor that has a broken wire on it. Everything seems to be running well, but I am not sure what this is for, and if I should somehow reconnect the wire or just unplug it and not worry about it? This is on my 1975 Gran Torino Sport, 351M. Thanks. |

My wagon's 400 had this as well and I can only assume it is some sort of sensor, but when everything was re-done and re-built it was eliminated. I asked my mechanic to eliminate anything that wasn't absolutely necessary to keep her running, which meant all the smog stuff went too.
I know I wasn't any help, but I am interested what others have to say. |

Well, I have done some research on-line, and it seems this is a Distributor Ambient Temperature Switch. I guess it has to do with vacuum advance for the distributor. I found several different styles on E-Bay too, but not the exact one for my application. It must not be too critical of a part.

You got it, it's a bi-metal contact switch. It's parte og the Cold Temperature Actuate Vacuum (CTAV) system. These switches were used on cars with the CTAV system along with the Thermactor system and catalytic convertors. Basically it controlled the vacuum advance depending on temperature. When the sensor was below 49 F, the distributor advance was directly from the spark port. Above 65 F, the vacuum advance was from the EGR port.
Like most of the emissions controls from this era, it's is archaic. If it were my car, it'd just steup the distributor advance direct to the carb. You may have to do some distributor tuning afterwards though.
