Hi all,

I dropped the fuel tank last weekend to replace the sending unit and clean out the rust inside the tank.  During the process, I noticed every exposed surface under the car has been sprayed with undercoating.  Now that the tank is removed, should I coat the exposed surface with more undercoating?  There is very light surface rust in some places so I'm considering applying Rust-Shield to the area instead.

Additionally, the rear cross member wasn't coated and has surface rust.  what are people using under their cars?  I'm not building an original here (although I believe people in the 70's loved undercoating everything), I do want to stop additional rust.

Curious to know what others have done in the past.  This is a good time for me to do some work under the car while I wait on the sending unit to arrive.

If there is rust, even surface rust, I wouldn't put undercoat over top.  A rust paint would be a better idea over rust, or mechanically remove the rust then paint and undercoat.  Will your car see inclement weather?

My car was undercoated when new, and that stuff did preserve the car well.  But man, what messy stuff.  On my the frame, chassis parts and other undercarriage parts that I have restored, I stripped them to bare metal and either painted or powder coated.  I still have undercoat on the floors, and don't plan on removing it.  But I also don't plan on adding anymore.
