Got a ton of leaks. I'm putting this engine into my 79 Pinto. But I need to replace the gaskets while it's out.
So what is a good gasket set? Will be doing the head gaskets while I'm at it.
Stock, except I will be putting a 4bbl aluminum intake and carb on it.
Thanks,
Russ

Are you doing the whole engine? I like Fel-Pro too, but any brand name set should be decent.

Thanks.
Yes, whole engine most likely. Might as well. Not sure where all the leaks are, so I don't want to miss one or twenty by being lazy.

yes while you have those sections open to replace the gaskets only a few extra mins. to replace both of those! and can pay dividends in the long run! Wink

FWIW IMO do yourself a huge favor and drop the heads off at the local shop with a new set of 1 piece valves, a fresh set of springs and matching retainers. Ford factory valves are notorious for head separations and killing otherwise perfectly good engines. if you're interested https://www.alexsparts.com/ can get you set up with everything you need at a great $. doing this now will put you in a good position for a cam swap later too, the stock 2V springs won't allow much lift over stock ;)

Thanks. I know the heads and valves aren't great, but this engine won't be getting any real mods done, and I am not currently planning on touching the heads, no budget for anything internal besides gaskets for the engine.  When that time comes, odds are I will go with aluminum. For now I just want it to be leak free.

I figure a stock 351C in a Pinto with a T5 and 4.10 rear gears should be plenty. LOL I probably won't be able to get enough tire in the back for it as it is.

Of course, but not for this car. I'd have to redo the cage at the rear, and that isn't going to be happening. Not now for sure.
Thanks,
Russ

gotchya Wink

my personal opinion of gaskets: they're over-rated. you need head gaskets and a front / rear main seal, re-use the oil pan end seals, use RTV on the rails. stock they never had an oil pump gasket, just a VERY TINY smear of RTV around the hole. RTV on the timing cover water pump and T-stat. new freeze plugs. for a truly leak free job on a stock 351C no valve cover gaskets just RTV. again RTV on the intake end seals and Mr Garbage paper intake gaskets. i'll tell you 1 thing not to overlook, the connecting rod nuts! no kidding don't re-use them / throw them as far as you can!

Thanks.
As long as it doesn't leak when I am done I will be happy.
Well, and it still runs. LOL hasn't leaked a drop in a couple of years just sitting.
