Hello forum...just a quick question regarding the VIN on the dash under the windshield.

Is the VIN tag attached to the dash pad or attached to the car?

Lets say you were to take out the dash...would the VIN go with it? Or is the VIN tag attached to the car?

Thanks...

Not sure on a '70 Cyclone, but have had my dash pad off ('69 Torino) and VIN plate is riveted to dash metal. Would think it's the same for security purposes

but my 68 mustang is attached the the trim between the windshield and the dash pad.
but 72-79 cars have it riveted the the metal that comes out with the dash pad...

The VIN tags aren't on the dash pad themselves for the Mercs.  I believe they are riveted to the metal dash.  I am not 100% sure on this for Mercs, but the 1970 Torinos have the VIN tag riveted to the metal dash as seen below.  I would assume the Mercs would be the same, since they are basically the same car.

Here is a 1970-71 Torino Metal Dash Structure

Here is where the VIN is riveted to the dash structure:

I am assuming you are asking this question because you are looking at purchasing a Cyclone and want to ensure its legitimate?  Based on what the location of the VIN, it is possible that it could have been changed.  So make sure you check the door tag, so that you know everything matches up.  Any other original documents will help too, like the build sheet, original window sticker, warranty card, etc.  I'd also consider getting a Marti Report too:

Here is some good info from Marti:

There would be some partial VINs stamped on the car somewhere too.  This would be another way to help verify that the car is legitimate.  I am not sure where the locations of these VINs would be on a 1970 Cyclone though.

Thanks...that was amazing information. Exactly what I needed to know.

The door tag on the Cyclone is illegible. I have a basic Marti....and it does seem to match....

I will investigate a bit more....
