Hi to all, what a great forum to join. I am about to work on rebuilding / replacing a 351C engine, vintage 1974, that has a noise that reminds me / sounds like a squealing bearing. The engine runs, compression is reasonable good on all cylinders but with this noise I am afraid it won't run much longer. Fair to say the engine does not run very smooth . My mechanic's stethoscope tells me the squeal is at the back of the engine. When just turning the engine over (coil unplugged) there is no squeal. Shifting the C6 transmission into any gear does not stop the squeal either. looking for anyone's thoughts on if it could be a transmission issue and not something like a crank bearing.. Thanks to everyone.

Welcome aboard, feel free to introduce yourself in the Welcome Mat too.  Do you have a video of the sound?  Have you checked the oil pressure on the engine?  I have never heard an engine bearing squeal.

really hard to say... usually if a bearing spins it with squeal for a second then pressure goes way up then down to nothingOuch
it could be a loose bolt in the bellhousing or the plate bent rubbing the flexplate???
i'd check for a vacuum leak that could make a noise and would make it run crappy too...

reminds me of my 72 chop top, yup chopped off the top Roadster Baby!

it had a distinct whine, sounded like it was doing a Batmobile impression, turbines ya know

Well, when running ( rough ) I do show oil pressure on the factory gauges, who know if the gauge is actually reading variable pressure or if the sending unit is just on/off. So, further investigation shows only 2 quarts of oil in the pan and 1 quart (maybe) in the filter. I am sure that didn't help. Either way I am still going to pull the motor and tranny if for no other reason just to do a thorough clean up of both because the oil pan gasket is leaking everywhere and has blown oil all over the place.......no wonder the underside has no rust. LOL

if you have the GT Sport gauges it should have the ability to read varying pressure with the large sending unit. but there are several different calibrations of sending units so if it's ever been replaced chances are it can be inaccurate to the gauge scale

Well, a few more days and I'll have the engine on the workbench. Then I'll start disassembly. Should be interesting..

save the spark plugs in order for post mortem diagnostic etc etc

Well, the plan is to pull the motor and tranny out as one assembly, wanting to check the relationship and connection between the two as a source for the noise. Today I spent 1/2 the day getting out the tranny cross member. As mentioned in previous threads, what a job it was. So stupid to have the x member sitting on top of the frame brackets. After I removed all the bolts, I attached a come-a-long between the rear axle and the driver's side and another come-a-long between the front coil spring and pass. side of the crossmember and after jacking up the tranny I was able to twist out the cross member.......project engine rebuild is continuing tomorrow.

once you jacked the tranny up did you remove the mount?, then you should have plenty of room to lift the crossmember up and off the brackets

Every old Ford engine I have had with lots of miles developed  lower end noise mostly due to not caring about changing the oil religiously and just adding a quart or so every week and a new filter never. Eventually it catches up and bye bye long block.

Looking forward to pics for sure.  The only positive from oil leaks is definitely the rustproofing you get at bo cost. Haha
