As far as wheels go, 2005 and up Mustang wheels have way too much backspacing,
Mid-90s to 2004 Mustang, and 92-02 Crown Vic/Grand Monkee/Town Car wheels fit, but tuck in a bit more than stock 70s wheels.

Ranger, Escape & Splash wheels might work too if the offset / backspace is close. i use Tire Rack for reference to see if the wheel stud pattern is the same for a particular vehicle i've seen potential wheels i like on

2005+ Mustang wheels fit, but they look goofy as the backspacing is off causing them to be inset deep. This in turn causes a huge gap between the tire and outer fender lip. I know this because I put a set of 19" Brembo/Performance pack wheels from my 2012 5.0 GT on my 72 Torino to move it around in the garage. Your best bet will be to buy a Wheel fitment Offset/Backspace gauge (34$ to $99 on Amazon), then you can buy the latest styles and know that they will fit. You can also use "Wheel Visualizers" like the one at www.customwheelsnc.com to actually see what the wheels will look like on a 72 Torino. There are other wheel manufactures as well that have templates for the Torino so that you can see basically what they will look like on your ride, but I don't remember them off-hand.

As already mentioned, offset will not work well with modern Mustang wheels.  You'll need to invest in quality spacers.  By then, you might as well get something that fits correctly.  There are plenty of 17 and 18" options out there, with the correct back spacing.  I ran 275-55-17 on the rear, and 235-55-17 on the front of my wagon.

The biggest wheel that I could fit under a stock setup was 18 x 9.5 with 5.25" backspacing. That's with 275/40R18 R888s. I think that's a pretty unusual setup compared to what comes on stock modern performance cars. Like most are saying, the backspacing/offset is way different.
