Hi everyone-
I just hooked up a vintage sun super tach to my 69 428 and got in to start it and the car won't start. It turns over but seems like there's no spark? I ran green wire to coil, white to ground, red to power and black to lights. When I disconnect the coil wire, the car starts up and runs fine. It shouldn't be an issue with the tach as it was recently rebuilt. Any thoughts on what the issue might be, and how to fix it, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

One more thing - the car has a mallory unilite distributor and a mallory promaster coil. Not sure if this matters, but thought I'd mention it. I will eventually bring it back to original coil and distributor but haven't gotten there yet.

Thanks so much... I will give this a shot... I hooked black up to the lights as the black wire is the wire that comes from the light bulb in the tach. I figured the white wire must be the ground.

Thanks guys. The diagram helped... I pulled the tach out of the housing and the white and green wires were crossed on the back of the tach. I changed the wires and that solved the ignition problem, but the tach isn’t working!!
I ran the power off of the wire to the power antennae. Just tested it and it’s hot when the ignition is on. When I turn the ignition I see the tach reset at zero, but nothing afterwards. Does this sound like an issue with the feed from coil or main power? Thanks for the help. I definitely need it!! |

Do you have the green wire connected to the negative coil terminal? The tach just reads how often the coil is discharging, so if your car runs there is no issue from the coil. It's got to be in the tach or your wiring to the tach.

red should be powered with the key on! power antennae wires usually only power up with the radio on or basically to the positive of the coil with the green trigger wire to the negative of the coil.
and the coil needs the ground wire hooked to ground the trigger wire only senses the pulses it requires all 3 to work the light wire is optional... |

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah, I have the green wire hooked up to the negative side of coil and the red wire (power antennae, has a manual control switch) is hot when the key is turned on... confused, I guess it could be an issue with the tach, although it shouldn't be as I just had it rebuilt. Might have to call the folks that rebuilt it

Well looks like I figured it out... actually I can't really say that... Last night I was frustrated and pulled the tach and disconnected all wires to the back of the tach individually, cleaned the nodes and then reconnected them in exactly the same way I had them connected. Turned the key and it works! No clue... Thanks for the help fellas. Very much appreciated!
