so needs some ideas on what to do on a 1972 ranchero. The frame is rusting out behind the passenger door where the frame swoops down. Has anyone else had this problem and if so what did you do to fix it? Frame swap or welding the frame?

Welcome, and the best path will be to find another Ranchero with a far better frame and main body, rather than attempt to repair the frame. You can dig deeper and see what shape the body is in, the whole floor, cowl area, bed etc. If your frame is the only major issue, than a lower cost(very rough body) donor would work well also. You can use any 72-76 Ranchero body for the main section etc, only the front has to be 72 parts. The rest(chassis) can be from the 72-79 run if I'm right about the frame being unchanged in majority. Slight differences of the gas tank or rear bumpers you can work around, others here will know more of those details.

there have been several members here that have tackled rusted frame repair in that location and where the body mounts sit near the firewall comes to mind. you might want to check that area before you decide on a course of action. i'd get the body off the frame and give it good going over
getting ahead of you and worst case, the Crown Vic 'taxi' frame has a 120.7" wheel base, the 72 Ranchero is on a 118" wheelbase or you could just 'back 1/2' it if the front is good to go but i have my doubts

That's a great post, there are some late model Fords that have similar dimensions, and the Crown Vic is one of those.

I have a 1974 Ranchero that I will be parting out. It has a really good frame.
I just have to remove the drivetrain first. I am in NH though, so you would have to make a road trip this fall.

strange were they rust. Under my 79 ranchero yesterday removing a turn sig bucket for someone in Fl admiring that bat area solid rad support needs blasting but solid . Turn my head and what the f cross section of frame behind rad support is rusted away. like 4t0 6 in right after strut rod is gone. At 76 this could be fatal.
