Does anyone know how to ID whether or not a car (in this case, my '77 XR7) has the optional high-current alternator? They apparently require different drive belts, and I didn't want to buy the wrong one, but I don't know how to tell which alternator I have. Given that my car has very few options, I'm betting it has the small one, but then again being bought in Ontario it may have been "winter equipped", so to speak.

Did the high-capacity alternator come standard with rear defroster or any other electricity-hungry options?

Thanks for any help!

The high current alternator has a plug that plugs into top of the case + the large diameter charge wire.  The base alternator all the wires have their own terminal and are on the back of the case.  Post a pick and we can tell you wich you have.

if you pull the alternator, the amperage rating should be on the case.

Wow, I'm a dumb-a$$ :D. It's amazing what a photograph will tell you. I took a shot with the flash on and saw "15 V, 70 A" on the case; I never noticed this when examining it under regular lighting. Can you guys confirm that this is what you'd expect a 70 A alternator to look like? Is that a stock size and basic configuration (one never knows what parts get replaced over the years)?

Thanks!

Yeah, thats the high current alternator.  With no power windows it probably got it because of the rear defrost or it may have been optioned with it, but either way it looks stock and original.  The alternator on my wagon is a remained unit and it no longer has the amp rating stamped on it.

Yeah, I had the rad flushed before putting it away, so I think some slopped. Come the spring I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it's not leaking ^_^.
