I am purchasing a 1971 Torino, factory equiped with a 429 4spd.
The cars driveline was removed. It's and a/c car as well.
Can I get a complete engine out of a T-Bird or Grand Marquis (429 or
460) to replace it. It seems like there are a lot of those
available, reasonably priced. I am not a purist as far as numbere
go, however it must fit properly and all accessories look stock.
Thank You!

Sure you can even use one out of a Lincoln. are the motor mounts still there? If not check Dearborn classics. If your not interested in numbers matching, Ford Motorsports has a GREAT 460 Crate Motor that is very reasonably priced. It is dyno'd at 535 hp to the fly wheel. I purchased one last year WOW.

You will be doing some shopping for the correct accessories, (the '70's Lincoln/Mercury stuff usually has big heavy and ugly cast iron A/C brackets and a Saginaw P/S pump, I'm pretty sure your car shoudl have the Ford pump) and and on the 70-71's you will need mounts for a unibody car, the Lincoln stuff won't work like it will in the '72 and up full frame cars . (I'd just go with Crites pieces and save yourself the hassle). Once you get the mounts and accessories situated, you can use a 429 or 460 out of anything and it'll look like a T-Jet from 10 paces, all bolts will line up and all 71 accessories will as well, but as soon as anyone sees the D3 head castings (AVOID D2VE like the plague) it'll be clear it's a replacement (and if it's a smog motor, stock it'll be a total dog). If you really want something fun, find any old 460, rebuild it with decent rods (SCAT) and Diamond or Probe Pistons, then get a pair of Scott J's (Reincarnation High Performance) ported big valve DOVE heads and a matched cam. The whole shooting match should cost no more than $3500 and easily make more than 500 horses while looking identical to stock and running forever..(the Aluminum SCJ headed crate motor Nev spoke of will actually make close to 600 with big tube headers, a bunch of tuning, a little touch up on the intake manifold, and a 1000+ cfm carb). As a comparison, my old D3 headed 10:1 460 was making more than 450 horses (I was running 105+ in the 1/4 at 4400 lbs) with amateur home porting on the exhaust side only and stock valves.. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Jim |

No problem, if the heads are D2VE you should pass on them, but the block will likely be a D1VE and it is a great place to start. If you have the D2VE heads, the cheapest route would be to get D3VE heads and clean them up, cores should be almost free. D0VE heads are next, very similar in performance, will make for higher compression with the same pistons, but the core cost is higher. Beyond that there are the D2OE PI heads and the D0OE-R CJ/SCJ heads, and a half dozen aluminum heads to choose from... How much do you want to spend and how fast do you wnat to go...

After looking at #s they are D1VE - 6015 - AA but where the E is there just top line. I found a web site that says 6015 for 71 means CJ / SCJ is that true ? I have not looked at webs yet. Im looking for 550 hp does it matter if its the thin one.

I've never heard of any CJ/SCJ heads with anything other than a D0OE casting number. Also, I've never heard of D1 casting heads (but I'm definitely not an expert). You may want to get some good clear pics and post them on the www.460ford.com site. (or here and one of us can post them over there). Do the end valve cover bolts holes go into the intake ports? For 550hp, any head will work, a nice port job and the right cam/intake/carb and you're there (even easier if you get a 460 crank and pistons for a few more cubes).. I would expect a noticable idle and a thirst for high octane (91 or better) fuel though, especially if you stay 429.

Don't worry about all that. My block is a regular old D1VE out of a Lincoln, it's alive and well over 600 hp.. The only non-boss block I've heard of having the thick main webbing was the D0VE-A block anyway (on the www.460ford.com site there was a "block party" where all casting #'s were checked and reported on).. Just get a set of C8, C9 or D0 heads and flat tops or D3 heads and domed pistons, get them ported with bigger valves (or get the porting guide from Scott J at reincarnation high performance) and throw and nice 240+ degree at .050 flat tappet cam with .600+ lift, (the motorsports A443 is nice, and the Comp Cams Xtreme series seem to work well). Use a Stealth, or Performer RPM, Offy Port-O-Sonic, or Victor intake and at least 850 cfm of carb and a good header/dual system and you're on your way.
