I just came a cross a 1970 Ford Torino Cobra 429 with a Shaker Hood. The guy selling it says it is all original and all numbers matching. Being new to this kind of stuff, I have no real idea on how to verify this. All I have is the vin#OR38J127170. How do you tell if this has the original engine & trani? I have asked for engine casting#? but the seller doesnt know where to look?! Can someone steer me on where to look for these numbers?

J is a 429 as far as I remember, and I think it might be a CJ as well.

http://grantorinosport.org/70torino06.htm#engine

Now that I have all of the old Ford Torino Page files copied over to the new server, the information about engine codes for 1970 is there.

Jim was right, 429 4-V "Cobra Jet Ram Air"

Thank you- From what I can tell, and it is quite hard to see these dang numbers- the block has a "460" above the water pump- so I would assume that this is not the original block- but, the heads match the 429?! Anyway, doesn't make much difference, I love the car- pretty fast too! Now- to replace the trani sea l- wish me luck!

What is the casting # on the heads?  (near the exhaust ports)  should be D0OR or the like

(Not anything with -VE at the end like C8VE, C9VE, D0VE, D2VE D3VE)

There are other signs as well..  But a J code Cobra is a good find, even if you have to locate a motor....

Are you familiar with the Ford casting date scheme?

ie C9 = 1969, D0 = 1970, D1 = 1971, etc?
