Another couple questions...
Looking at buying a kit and doing a full re-ring/bearing/gasket to it.
Any advise?

Don't quote me on this, but I believe the 1988-1991 351W in interceptor trim pulled 180hp at 4800rpm and the compression ratio was 8.8:1 but again, I'm not certain of it. Good place to ask would be the crownvic.net forums in the Box Body section.

Coincidentally, I'm preparing to rebuild a '96 roller 351W for my F150. I'm going to farm out the machine work (of course) and I will probably get the machine shop to assemble the short block. I find that a long, slow process especially when I haven't done one for years. I'd sooner put in some extra hours at my trade (electrician) and hand the money over to them. That way another tradesman is doing what he's good at, and I know the engine's assembled correctly, without checking everything 10 times.
As far as machine work, I'm getting the block dipped and checked, the cylinders deglazed, and the crank polished and mic-ed. The cleaning and deglazing could be done at home and the crank checked by eye (no visible wear) and plastiguaged, but I've got too many projects, and I want this one finished so I can move on to the next, hopefully my Torino.
One thing I WILL be doing is making sure the parts are North American made. You can buy parts that are cheaper, but you can't buy parts that are better.
I'm sure I haven't told you anything you don't already know, but that's what I'm doing.

Well, I looked and I can get a full re-ring, re-bearing and gasket set for under $100.
I can also get a set of GT40P heads.
Might just put in a new Timing chain set, oil pump, redo the rings and bearings, add the GT40P heads and call it a motor. See how far it gets me next year.

Update...
Ordered the following
Complete Engine Re-Ring, Re-Bearing, Gasket set $77
Melling M83 Oil Pump $22
HEI Distributor $44
Comp Cams Double Roller Timing set $35
Also picked up the set of GT40P heads with manifolds.
So just a ball hone run through the cylinders, a good cleaning, assembly lube and VOILA freshened up better breathing inexpensive dirt motor!
Should stay together for the season and run pretty strong.
NOW I need some info/advise...
What is the BEST flowing OEM CAST 351W 2BBL intake?
What size carb should I run?
The Carb has to be OEM, so What Ford 2BBL (NON HOLLEY) am I looking for?
What are the ID numbers on the carb so I can dig through stuff at the bone yards!
THANKS
Tranny question to follow...

One quick little word of wisdom on the dist. Judging by the price on the HEI you got a used one or an Ebay unit. I bought mine from Ebay for $60 shipped to my door. It lasted maybe 50-75 miles before the module went out. I would suggest getting a replacement one before even installing it. Just my expierence.

Carl, I don't know if this helps, but the Bubba's M-Block workshop pages I recreated does have the Motorcraft 2150 pages. While incomplete (he never finished them), they did have some great starting information. I am not sure when Ford stopped using the 2150, but since it was in trucks I would say early 80's? When you say non-Holley, I presume Motorcraft is in your realm of possibilities?
Since I am unaware of what Ford used on carb vehicles after the 2150 was replaced (whenever that was), I can't comment further, but I do know that the 2150's can be tuned/modified. With regard to 351W intakes (OEM), I'd look to late 60's very early 70's intakes. No EGR being the major reason. |

The heads I picked up turned out NOT to be GT40P.
There are castings saying GT but not the GT40P stamp.
hae to look in to what they are to I can determine CC and then ensure I do not go over 9:1 compression.

All you have to look at to know if they are GT40 or the P's is the lines on the face (where the accessory holes are) of the heads. If you have 3 lines then they are GT40's if you have 4 lines then they are GT40P's.
Here is the info on heads......
87-95 Stock E7TE Valve Size Intake - 1.78, Intake Ports Flow @ 124cc
87-95 Stock E7TE Valve Size Exhaust - 1.45 GT-40 Valve Size Intake - 1.84, Intake Ports Flow @ 155cc GT-40 Valve Size Exhaust - 1.54 65cc Cumbstion Chambers GT-40P Valve Size Intake - 1.84, Intake Ports Flow @ 185cc GT-40P Valve Size Exhaust - 1.46 59cc Cumbustion Chambers/61cc Cumbstion Chambers (depends on model) So in short, they both flow better than stock, however Ps outflow 40s nicely, and they have a smaller cumbstion chambers, along with using different spark plugs and angles. Here is a pic of the GT40P 4 lines......

THANK YOU for that info!
1 piece of info I did not see...
the CC of the stock head combustion chamber.
If the stock motor was 8.8:1 Compression ratio and I swap to the GT40 heads with a smaller chamber then it might increase the comp ratio too much and force me to change pistons.
I have to stay at 9.0:1 or less, HARD RULE with big fines if not!

Checked the castings...
1993 Casting numbers, and GT castings on them.
Also has the number 70 Cast on them in numerous areas??
3 lines on front of heads
So that makes them GT40.
They were on a 5/96 Ford Explorer 2WD.
They look in good condition.
The headers are definately those dang funky looking GT40P Explorer pipes.
Some of the piping comes out and goes UP then back down with heat shielding on them.
Took pics, will post later.

Pics of the heads...
Any solid info on these or is what was posted correct?
They will obviously flow better than the stock 351W stuff.
Just need to compare the CC to check final compression ratio.

The HEI Distributor was delivered today!!!
WAY COOL LOOKING!!!
Turned out to be cheaper buying this than a new lower Cap, Cap, Rotor, and new Coil.
and then no more ignition wiring(duraspark) issues.
I just have to make sure the 12V source is a pure 12V not off a fusible linked source.
NO WORRIES with it going in the Race car.
The IMCA Hobby Stock rules do not even allow you run an alternator.

haven't pulled it apart yet.
Cannot find a site that lists the info either.
Was told the 89 351W had a 8.8:1 compression. Is this correct too?
When I put the GT40 heads on it, the difference in CC will change that ratio, I just need to make sure I do not go above 9.0:1 or I will need to do alot more motor work than I want to!

How is the racing organization you are gonna race in measuring it? Ya gotta measure all your parts to get a true compression ratio. Advertised #s are usually short by a small amount. Production tolerances added up. Head #s would help.

Here is the number off the stock 351W heads.
Can someone PLEASE help me out with the CC of these and the motors compression ratio!?
And anything else you can help me with on these?
As you know I am looking to put the GT40 heads directly on this motor with stock bore/stroke/pistons.
The GT40 heads are a 64CC chamber from what I have found.

Pulled the other head off tonight, pulled the tranny off.
The motor is toast!
filled with water and had sludge oozing out the drain plug.
left rear cylinder is seriously rusted and the motor is locked up right now.
So I stuck it up on the shelves for now.
Time to turn my attention to my other projects.
1. 1997 Dakota is getting front end rebuild, A/C Compressor and recharge. A little body work and possible paint.
2. 1990 Thunderbird Super Coupe is getting gas tank, fuel pump, ported exhaust manifolds, complete exhaust from manifolds back, ported heads, newer style supercharger, 10% pulley, 70MM BBK throttle body, 70 MM MAF, ARP Head bolts, stereo, speakers, CB, door hinge pins, seat belt/interior conversion, remote fuel door set up, rear wing, color match painted rims. I THINK that covers it! Already did drop srpings, KYB Shocks, slotted and drilled rotors, ball joints, tie rods, front trail arm bushings, new tires and a Cold Air Intake.
3. Will be starting a PROJECT THREAD for my 72 Resto! MORE info to come on that! I SCORED a great deal on a 73 to use for my project!

Thanks for that info.
As talked about... I did not get GT40P heads so the info above for the GT40 heads has helped alot.
I have been looking and researching and STILL cannot find the stock Compression Ratio for the 89 351W or the CC on the heads pictured that came off the 351W they are not E7T heads.
They are E5AE-CA heads.
Can someone PLEASE help me out with this??
1. Stock Compression Ratio
2. E5AE-CA heads CC size

Just got my "How to re-build the Small-Block Ford" book from E-bay.
got all the info for the heads!!!
351W heads E5AE-CA is 67-70cc, 1.78 int, 1.45 exh
The GT40 heads F3ZE-AA (from a 93 Cobra) 60-63cc, 1.84 int, 1.54 exh
So the GT40 heads will MOST DEFINATELY raise the Compression ratio on the stock 351W.
SO now I am researching what the STOCK compression ratio was on the 89 351W CV PI motor.
That will at least tell me a start point and then figure what the CR will be when I put the other heads on it.
Also looking at possibly putting the GT40 heads on the 302 after I put the 347 stroker kit in it.
The 72 heads...
MOST were 67-68 castings were 63CC the book does not show 72-78 casting CCs.
but I would assume they are more SMOGGED UP and higher CC and the 8.5:1 CR for the PUNY 141BHP. Assuming tha means the GT40 Heads would (alone) raise the CR on the 72 302.
It was the 97-2000 Explorer that had the GT40P F7ZE-AA heads that were 58-61CC.

http://www.racingjunk.com/category/72/Street_Stock/post/1980582/FORD-TORINO-PURE-STOCK.html not good at sending posts but this might be something you would want to check into.I think an enduro car only has a cage in the passenger compartment but a good starting place. I do have some old rollcages if it wouldn't cost a arm and a leg to pick it up.
