This has been sitting for decades but still moves freely, big metering blocks have me weary of too much carb.

Not absolutely sure, but it looks like a GM Quadrajet replacement Holley.

That is a 4165 carb and is Holley's idea of a spread bore GM carburetor. Not a 4150 or anything, that's for sure. The similar 4175 looks different but much more like a Q-jet to me, I think that's because my idea of a Q-jet is whatever you'd find on an Olds 307 from the 80's era when they were darn near impossible to make run right:

Both of them are merely 650cfm if you can believe that. A regular Q-jet is supposed to flow up to 750cfm or more under load.

Putting it on a 429 would be sacrilege IMO...

I searched for Holley 6854 in Google and first result it came up with was a service parts manual in PDF form for all Holley carbs from holley.com and that list number was under the 4165/4175 section. A search of Summit for those model 4165 and 4175 carburetors got me the pics of them which shows the 4175 is somewhat different from what you have, so I'm pretty darn sure that thing on your workbench is a 4165. Here's what a new $420 4165 looks like:

I wouldn't put it on a Ford myself, but if you've got a spread bore manifold or don't mind running $13 and 3/4" worth of spacer in order to make it work on a square bore, it's all good. It would save you from locating another suitable carb. 650 is about 1.5 times 429, it really is ideal in that respect.

Maybe include in the ad you'd be willing to trade for a 4150/4160 or other square bore Holley, at least I would. I actually had a guy offer to trade me an S-10 pickup for my POS Ciera but then he changed his mind and decided he wanted something with a 4-cylinder. I would have gladly taken a POS S-10 for my car...so after I get the column fixed I'll be mentioning "trades welcome" in the ad. Who knows, maybe someone will offer you something else you need, like an intake, or headers, or some other Ford goodie?!!
