OK, so I got it kinda figured out.

Those are 2 old shots using weight transfer for traction. Competition Engineering adjustable shocks & 28X10 slicks. Note how far that rear wheelwell lip covers the tire. Worked well untill we got it into the low 11's.

I'll work on the newer shots with the Southside bars.

Have you seen the 1/4 vid of mine?

torinocobra.com/videos/Torino%2010-30-05.wmv

I was running stock suspension (urethane bushes in the rear) with soft Pep Boys shocks.  (wide by heavy front wheels and battery in factory location also).  Car was loaded up a little as I drove it to the track..

1.69 60' times, but still way short on mph though compared to you..  (basically untuned 545 with little 850 carb and 3.56 gears)

What headers are you running?  What was the problem at the low 11 mark that made you change?  And what took you from low 11's to where you are now?

Thanks!

Jim

Great race track shots, I'm hoping to get someone to take some shots of my Torino at the track this season. I'll post them on the forum when I get some.

BTW, if you and the car weigh at least 3600 together, you have more than 620 at the tires and more than 750 at the crank to get 131mph, that crate 514 is kickin!

Jim, I use Hooker Super Comp. headers (super comp but they have street hookups) They are the only ones I could find for that app. other than custom $$.

With a 460 it ran low 12's, the 514B low 11's, the 514D 10.70s @128. I cheated to go 10.54 @ 131.7 by using RADIAL drag slicks. See with stuff like a really tight convertor & radials I kinda cheat on your HP numbers. But I'm going back to my regular Goodyears 'cause they last longer & are more consistant.

Low 11's & we couldn't hook anymore so I squeezed in the 29X11 slicks & the Southside bars, but I think 10.50's is the limit without putting in a rear clip.

The MPH to HP conversions should still be close, only your old bias slicks at low pressure should skew them the other way due to extra drag, even the radial slicks are still a bit tougher to turn than street radials..  Your trans, conv., and 9" rear will eat up a percentage of power regardless of your tires, and if you leave at 2000, you prolly still flash to 2500 or more (even a stock 460 conv stalls around 2000 behind a 545, at least mine did, and it would barely idle in gear with a smaller cam than you have)..

BTW, I think they got mid 120's out of the old 514 crate in a 1968 or 1969 Torino, there was an article in Super Ford about several of the crate motors installed and tested..  The Torino was on the cover.

Don't be so modest, you're making a ton of power!  (and unlike me, you've spent time wisely in the total combination to really make it run)

Sorry again. Busy getting our race cars ready; then got busy running them. Won the opening race at Grand Bend & my son, in his last year of junior dragster, has won the first two races at St.Thomas. We are building another '72 Gran Torino for him for next year.

Anyway, see how much more level it lauches with the relocated bars. Big differance & better traction from such a little change. Note new paint & graphics.

Car looks great and hauls a$$.  Very nice!  Maybe I'll get out to Norwalk sometime when you're there and you can give me a hand getting my car down the track a little quicker..  What did you do with your old wheels?

Thanks,

Jim

The old ones will be going on the other '72 that we're building for my son. Good eye Jim.

Comp Cams makes a Magnum roller rocker that's 1.8 as a direct replacement of the 1.73. Gives u a little more lift for more torque to more that weight.

Did you have any trouble getting the pushrod length right with the magnum rockers?  And where/how much?  (I currently have the Harland Sharps that are slightly less than perfect as far as alignment goes)

Thanks!
Jim

(I'm always looking for a set of light weight skinnies to try out at the track, I understand that they can be worth half a tenth or better compared to heavy x wide street wheels.. )

Jim,  I have a set of MT skinny tires (3 1/2" ) , which are brand new.  They are just for the track.  If you want them make me an offer.

Probably more like a full tenth & a change in your reaction times too, if that matters to you.

Reaction times aren't important yet, I'm still going for #'s..  I had no idea they were worth that much though..  Did you have any trouble getting the pushrod length set up with the magnums?  And where/how much on the purchase?

Thanks!

Don't remember how much. I ordered them directly from Comp Cams but any perf. shop should be able to get them. They were also worth about a tenth of a second. No I didn't change pushrods. They have worked fine for 3 years running up to 6500 rpm. Check piston to valve clearance though.

Here is a pic of the wife launching last year. Launches are better now with a 3500 stall and 4:56 gears. They made her change classes to pro strees cause she was beating the men driving chevys. Best time is 8.7 @ 80 mph

The 514 makes a ton of HP & torque. Good bang for low bucks, enjoy.

We race it every weekend from April till Nov., with monthly maintenance just oil change & adjust rockers.

Every winter we go through it & do whatever it needs. Valve springs every year & oil pump every 2 years no matter what. Go through the C6 every year & 9" rear every second year.
