Quite a few years ago I owned a mid 80's Maxima with a 5 speed and had it in my old warehouse behind my office trying to fix it. It would crank all day and never fire, so I had been working on it for several hours when a couple of friends stopped by to see how it was going. Warehouse was 120 feet long by 30 feet wide and I had the car sitting at the entrance where I had pushed it in there for shade over the hood. Buddies are sitting there talking to me about it and I was showing them how it would crank but not fire off. Standing outside the car with the door open I stuck my right foot inside to step on the clutch while reaching in to turn the key. Damn thing cranks over 2 times and hit, startled me, foot slipped off the clutch pedal, hits the gas, Maxima goes barrelling through the warehouse dragging me outside the car, hood up, tires squealing on the coated concrete floor, driver's door open with me hanging on for dear life. As we go, it is collecting things with the front bumper (trash bins, boxes of Xerox paper, rolls of bubble wrap) and finally stalled out about 10 feet from the back wall. Buddies are hysterically laughing, I'm scraped up, pissed off, hinges on driver door are trashed, ignition key bent, bumper/air dam/grill are gimped up, supplies strown everywhere. To top it all off, it was not during work hours, so the security camera in the warehouse was on and running.

Important safety lesson learned without death or dismemberment. I would count that as a good day, LOL.

That hurts, has anyone heard of the darwin files or the darwin reports. It about people who do stupid things with some times a deadly result. It is about the thinning of the herd.

I cam very close to offing myself or someone else in 1998. I was a package delivery courier and I had a package going to the Nationwide Insurance building in downtown Columbus, Ohio. I found a parking spot up front, right up front, no meter, 20 minute limit, I figured this was plenty long. I had been delivering packages to this building for a year now and suddenly became aware that the front door was now persona non grata for couriers. Security would't let me in to have the receptionist sign like usual. I was told to go to the loading dock so it would go through the mail room (and probably get delivered the next day and be hella late).

I drove around and the security guard in the booth asked for my driver's license and insurance. I told him I don't have time for that crap. Drove my '88 Dodge Shadow (the very first car I bought off eBay for $100, hood flew off on the way home from Rochester NY and I drove it like that) around to the gate, left it in neutral, applied the parking brake a few clicks, got out of the car, lifted the gate, pulled my car through, and then attempted to get back in.

There were 3 problems with this.

1) The parking brake was useless, cable had rusted through, and I didn't know this.
2) I didn't make drive, I had driven around the back in second, so one click only put it in drive
3) While getting out I locked the door with my elbow

After the gate was a steep downhill grade followed by a busy dock with people walking about and then a wall covered in wooden pallets stacked to the ceiling. My car dragged me for about the first 30 feet and all I could do while sliding down the slippery concrete was yell "FORE" as loud as I could. The car missed every single person down there and crashed into the pallets. This put chunks of wood through the radiator, both headlights, and the air cleaner box. Engine was still running, front tires were still spinning. By the time I got down there, someone had shut it off.

I had to pay for the cleanup effort.

16 pallets x $3.50 returnable core charges = $52.00
8 man-hours of janitorial labor x $10.00/hr = $80.00

Also, I am banned from that building and it's property for life. And as usual, because I am an idiot, I tested this theory in 2003 while visiting Columbus with my parents. My picture is in the binder at the front desk and I was escorted to the curb and told if I come again to test that theory, I will be charged with trespassing and jailed with no questions asked. I was also informed I might as well not try and visit Nationwide Arena or any other building owned by the company.

Since then I have delivered packages to other Nationwide insurance agents and headquarters in Texas. But these are leased properties so they can't ban me there. A*holes.

It's the first building on the right on High St. as you come down the bridge into downtown from the Short North. The cross street is --you guessed it-- Nationwide Blvd. SW corner of that intersection. I loved parking on Chestnut there and walking across and in the front door until they screwed that up.

It would be this building right here, viewed from High at Chestnut, looking northwest and up:
