So my 74 Torino starts just fine when cold, even after sitting for two months: a couple of blips of the throttle before cranking it and it always starts fine.
However if I drive to the point where it reaches operating temperature and I turn it off (to fill up on gas for example), it inevitably has a really hard time starting: the starter engine starts strong and then it feels like it encounters resistance (as in it doesn't rev the engine as briskly as it normally does) and then eventually the car starts, sometimes with a little puff of smoke. Actually the more it has problems starting, the more it smokes.
Suggestions? Timing issue? Carb issue? |

Sounds like the timing might be too far advanced.

You may have a couple of things going on there. 1) Check your battery cables and your connection to the starter. Also check the ground strap from the block to the frame/body.
2) next time you shut the car off hot pull off the air cleaner and see if your carb is leaking gas after the engine is off. You car could be flooding out slightly (the smoke you see) and that would make it hard to start. 3) check your timing they like to run nice at 12-14 BTC and still start real good when hot. They run even better at 16-20 BTC BUT then the Hot starting issue can happen (starter sounds like it's defective running slow or straining to start car)

Sounds like timing issues. Cranks like duh-ruh-r u h- r u h-ruhruhruh vroom? Timing probably and the smoke (if it is out the tailpipe) is a buildup of gas from the slow cranking. Smoke under the hood from the battery means a super high load from the starter (timing/weak starter/poor ground), bad cables or grounds, or loose/corroded contacts in the battery/cables/starter. I am having the same issues with the '68 Ranger, and mine is a timing/wiring issue that I have given up on since the engine is a "short-timer".

Smoke is from the right side tailpipe and not sure how to interpret your sound description but as I turn the key it initally cranks fine just like when it's cold but it starts to immediately slow down getting progressively worse until I either let it rest for a couple of seconds before trying again or it fires up. I guess it's timing issues.
