Thought I'd start another thread as McFord's posting prompted me to wonder when traditional stop and start dates occurred from one model year to another.  Anyone have exact figures for 72 to 73?  I guess the Marti Reports would give us some info, so if someone had a really late build on a 72 and someone had an early build on a 73 would could narrow it done.

So I'll start.  My build date on my 72 GTS is June, 19 1972 ("A" = Atlanta, Georgia).  I'm guessing pretty late in the model run?  Anyone with a 72 later date or an earlier 73?  Just curious.

Other plants were "H" = Lorain, Ohio and "B" = Oakville, Ontario

My understanding is September seemed to be the rough flip to the new model lines...not 100%, but IE: the 1972 GTS was introduced in September 1971.

Perhaps someone much more learn-ed and wiser than I can help.

Well i'm pretty close My 72 GTS was built 7/72 ,it.s second character in the VIN is A so guessing if that.s the Factory code mine was built at Atlanta after yours Paul. My 73 Gran Torino formal roof was built in 10/72 so a safe bet is September starts the Production run.not sure but maybe late July early August ends the production model year as they have to have time to retool for any changes made from year to year, unless that doesn't matter on the assembly line but would think they would need some time betweewn as to not build a half breed,LOL

Hard to say when the may have started production for a particular model and year,my 97 Ford Explorer was built in 7/96 so it's a very early production and the VIN ends with 00578 so to me that would be the 578th 97 Ford Explorer off the line

My '76 was built in July or August of 1976 (will have to look at it to confirm), so it is a very late production car - especially since they started a completely new line of LTD II models for the '77 model year.

The reason I asked originally about the '75 GTS I bought was that out of 318,482 '75 model Torinos (Base, Gran, Brougham, Sport, Elite), only 5,100 were Sports. If mine was built in 3/75 and there were so many other models, how could a person tell if any Sports were made after that date? If the popularity was so small for the Sport cars, and orders quit coming in, then who knows? This could be an interesting thing to find out.

Well depending on how many 72 Sportroofs were built mine can be among the last for 72's,as it was built in July 1972 so depending on when production end it could be the last of it's kind as 73 they changed the nose

So Jeff's car was built at the same plant and built in July of 1972.  From September 1971 to July 1972 is 11 months, so I'm guessing somewhere in August would be the switch over date?  Anyone else have a later build date 1972 from any plant?  Paul~

So basically we are right on track as Steve's car is built in the very beginning of September so 72 production had to stop on August sometime,so they had about a month more after mine was built and then September started the 73 model.Would like to know if anyone has a 72 built in August        BTW, I posted this just in case your wondering why it says guest,I had 2 profiles and now that the software allows name change I changed my name to 72 GTS 429 and this profile lost it's name but tiss I Jeff who posted it

Steve, Great piece of information; especially the order date of 08/22/72.  Anyone with an earlier build date for a 1973 or a later build date for a 1972 from any plant?  It would be cool if we could narrow it down further.  Paul~Big smile

How many plants built the GTS?
If there was say 2 plants building the intermediates, I could see this happening.
