Hey guys, I am just getting into a BBF transplant for my 72 GTS project and I have a few questions.
I have seen, however unable to find a discussion on the springs to use to stiffen the ride. I remember the thought was near 500# for the front and 200# springs for the rear. Any ideas on part numbers for springs that have worked well?
Also, I need a set of BBF motor mounts/frame mounts for the car as well. Anyone got a set for sale? I will get pics posted asap of the body off frame restoration. |

I am about to undertake this project in just a couple weeks.
While getting a custom built set of springs for your car is the absolute best thing to do, I used the heaviest NAPA springs for a big block available in the chassis, and then cut 3/4 a coil off mine. It was the best solution, considering that I didn't have the time to wait 6 weeks, which is what it would have taken at the time to get a custom set of springs. We cut them the correct way though, and if we did our math correctly, the springs should be right at around 400# (yeah, I know it is a little soft). I have had absolutely no problems since, but then again, I am still currently running the 302 in my car. The car sits a little high in the front, but once I put the 460 in it should drop at least an inch or two.

Thanks. I have read several people discussing cutting springs. I have a MOOG spec chart and wondered if you can just go off the spring rating and height. Sounds too easy, probably isn't.

motor mounts are only availble from Crites
there are several threads that contain the info about them I was lucky and got a good used set out of a 75 Lincoln Mark IV with 460 to use on my 72 GTS with the transplanted 429 as they welded incorrect mounts to the crossmember instead of finding the correct ones as far as springs are concerned I doubt my car had them installed and the factory 351CJ Q code springs are in it and them Clevelands are heavier then the 302 or 351 Windsor so the added weight on the Cleveland moto might not be too different then of a big block so mine sits the way I like with a slight rake to the front but the stance is perfect for me and have a pretty tall tire up front and no rubbing issues. You can see photos and the way my car sits in my progress thread. If you have a Cleveland before then might consider leaving those springs and no cutting of new springs is needed but 302 or 351W probably need a stiffer spring as those engines are a bit lighter |

My car had the original 351 Cleavland and I installed the 460/C6 combo and bought new Moog springs for the Cleavand application. Cut 1/2 coil off before installation. It sits just right with the 460/C6. Not to high. Not too low. Nice rake rear to front. Good luck. Ron

I am a fan of running small block springs with a big block.

Yeah, looks good. Any problems with tire rub or bottoming out?

Nothing related to the big block swap (I bought the wrong offset... engine size wouldn't have mattered. Have since fixed).. OEM fit fine, even with wider tires.

What engine was in your car before the swap? I have a 73 Torino that originally came with a 302 and c4 that I am putting a 429 and c6 in, would it be safe to run the ones that are currently in the car?

Both of my rancheros started out as small block cars. The question of safe is easy. Yes it would be safe. It just depends on what kind of ride/look you want from the car. the small block springs with the big block would be fine. your ride will be soft and you might have to be careful when approaching those steep driveways. My only suggestion be is to use "new" springs. Using the almost 40 year old ones that are in the car now might be "too soft" and you might have freqent bottoming out issues.

Both were 351W cars. My 76 Elite was a 351W car as well when I put a 460 in it. I kept the soft springs, put good shocks and went with OEM big front and rear sway bars. I had no issues with it, and I was pretty pleased with it. I only started flip flopping springs around to change stance. The nose isn't going to magically scrape the ground with a big block unless you drive like Starsky and Hutch, in which case.. you need more than springs. |
