There is a stock 460 and c6 out of a 78 Lincoln with 60,000 miles that I have been looking at buying. The seller says it ran good when pulled and for $500 it sounds like a good deal. I am just wondering how much power I could get out of it with cam, headers, intake, carb, and timing?

I dont have much of a budget for it and would like to keep the bottom end stock as well as the heads. Is 350 hp and 450 ft/lbs reasonable out of this?

I would say you are making a good choice. Getting 350 hp with bolt on parts is easy as pie. Just come up with a good matched package. But it does always come down to how much cash you have. Thumbs Up

don't forget the 460 needs special mototr mounts to fit in a Torino and the factory style are no longer available new.you can either find a good used set which are hard to find or buy the Crites aftermarket mounts which are $200.
I lucked out and got a good used set off a 75 Lincoln Mark IV but not sure if the 78 Lincoln used the same mounts.find out if the motor still has the 3 piece mounts attached before buying that engine cause if not you mighjt as well bump your expense to $700 to but that motor as the additional cost for mounts if not included.

not sure on what the factory hp on the 78 460 is exactly but read it was 210 hp which is not much more then some of the 73 small blocks are putting out . 302 2V in 73 had 137hp 351 2V Windsor had 156hp and the 351C 2V had 159hp.The 351CJ 4V had 246hp the 73 460 4V had 269hp

the pre72 engines is where the horsepower is the 72 and up got detuned for emmissions and unleaded fuel and lost horspower.
my 69 429 2v has 320hp stock and when I do my perfomance mods keeping stock pistons I should be around 450hp or better and that is more then a 100hp then your looking to get from that 78 460 which big blocks in a 73 Torino tend to be expensive as the headers alon are around $600 for a big block to fit a Torino. you would be better off finding a 351 windsor which are not hard to find and the mounts and headers are cheap and easily available. If you can try to find a 351Cleveland cause even the 2V has lots of postential as I have a 74 351C 2V that I did cam, intake, 4bbl carb, lifters, valve springs and puchrods with long tube headman headers and it was pretty stout motor which all stemmed from a starting base of 162hp that cam stock and alot easier to find the parts for to fit a Torino then the 429-460 big blocks

There's always been a lot of hype as to how much more horsepower pre '72 engines had than '72 and up. Although engines were detuned somewhat in 1972 the big difference is how they were rated ...Gross HP vs Net HP. Pre '72 engines were dyno'ed with no accesories or exhaust. 1972 and up had all power robbing accessories and exhaust attached, thereby lowering the HP output .

I have about $1000 to spend + what ever I get from selling the engines/transmission I have.

Engines:

302 originally from the car that has 93,000 miles on it, ran ok but smoked alot.

351W H.O. (205 net HP and 315 ft/lbs stock)out of a 87 F-150 that was given to me which has 160,000 miles on it, but it was stuck from water getting in the egr equipment (I believe) in the drivers side rear cylinder. My dad and I got the engine to turn over and the cylinder wall doesnt look to bad after pulling the heads. Most likely will need rebuilt (how much would that cost?). The heads for sure will need redone and the machine shop said that would be around $300.

Transmissions:

C4 originally out of the Torino and seemed to shift well.

Small block C6 out of the F-150, my uncle who gave it to me said he thought it was slipping a little before the truck was parked for 15 years.

So... 460vs351Wvs302 Any opinions/advice?

you'll need a big block C4 bellhousing, or a dedicated BBF C6 if you go the 460 route.

The C6 trans is included in the $500 purchasing price. Thats why it seems like a good deal to me, if it was just the engine I most likely wouldnt be considering it lol.

I think all the extras for the 460 is gonna cost you alot as I said headers alone are over $600 for the big block
I would rebuild the 351W and have a fresh motor.you can use your C4 behind it.The C6 is a beefier trans and I would keep it but it would most likely need rebuilt so start with the C4 you can always swap later when you have more money to redo the C6
I just think the 351W would be more cost effective and if your into it can port the heads yourself which helps gain some hp

I think $1000 could get a stock 460 regasketed and a C6 resealed with mounts and crites headers in the car. If he can sell the other parts, do a very mild cam and 4bbl setup. All depends how much you trust the guy selling it.

Stock 460 = 11 MPG +/-
Stock 351W = 14-15 MPG +/- (in my experience).

If that factors into your thinking.

73 torino,
I'm a "new" torino guy here, but have been in the mustang game for years & spent more time wrenching on small block fords than most guys have driven their cars.
I didn't see what you'll be doing with the car  driver or racer, show car, but if it's just a basic driver or "street car"  here goes.

MY OPINION..... " feel free not to take this free advice"
Keep the 351 block, the heads from that year are e7  's  I would junk them & get some aftermarket or early model heads that have already been re worked , you will not save much money having those e7 heads " upgraded & will for sure get more power out of aftermarket ones , the pistons in that motor are also low compression... junk them too, the cam is more than likely the not going to be too suited for performance either, if is a roller block  that's good... if not I would convert it to a roller cam .. it might seem like a lot of money to do so, but not if you have a fresh rebuild and wipe out a lobe off your new cam due to "now days" oil formulas & have to do another complete rebuild after only a few HUNDRED miles...TRUST ME ON THIS!
keep the c4 it's lighter & there are plenty of parts to "bulk" it up if you get into too serious power if the car had a 302 a lot of the suff will work with the 351. Keep in mind the 351 has a taller deck height, intakes & oil pans will not swap, but valve covers timing chain cover,  fuel pump, "some"headers, dampener, flywheel, block plate. & more will swap from one motor to the other.
Hope some of this helps.

67 mustang fastback, 83,84,85,88,95 mustangs, 73 torino sport 429,& not enough time!
