Hey guys,
I have a nice set of C8VE 429/460 heads that I plan on using on my engine build. My question is what do I need to do to these things to make them really breath? I plan on a 400-450hp street build, so nothing too radical so it will be a dependable cruiser.
I read thru the "How much power..." topic but didn't see the C8VE mentioned. Are these about the same as the D0VE heads and respond as well?
Thanks in advance for your input....

The C8VE heads were the original style 385 engine heads (preceded the D0VE, CJ and SCJ models).
As early models they did not have the refinements of the later versions but for daily street driving should be ok although I am not sure about getting them over 400hp.
Most cast 385 heads really benefit from some pocket porting to remove the exhaust hump. This also keeps you from having to do port matching which can take considerable time.
Part will depend on what you machine shop is going to charge for the porting, valve job, new springs, etc....
If it is going to run more than say $1400, you might be better off going with a set of Ford CJ or Kassee P-51 heads than can be had for about $1800 set up.
