So I finally got to drive the Cougar after 2 months of being parked.

Now I can get nitpicky with issues. Maybe you all can help.

1. Does it seem normal that if the windows are anything but fully raised, the rattle on bumps?
2. I've noticed that the doors, even when fully shut, still can be pushed in about 1/4". yet another rattle. I might just pull the pin inside on the pillar, so that they are 'truly' shut, and worry about alignment later. The rubber 'stops' are there on both doors, they aren't missing.
3. In tighter/slower turns, that rear axle is still pretty grabby. Not Chattery with noise, but, you can feel it catch and release many times. It's only a trac-loc, this sound right?
4. Always remember to bolt down or secure your battery.... my bungee cord system (my inner fender is dissolved, so this is the best it gets until I swap inner fenders) worked... however, I did get a nice set of sparks rise from the hood when I took a turn.... I put a rubber battery cable boot over the positive terminal for now, and another bungee cord Confused.

Other than that, it seems ok, I guess. Car doesn't roll smoothly really at all.... but I have  a feeling I lost some wheel weights somewhere along the line.

Just a heads up as to what I've been doing.

As for brakes... Definitely can tell there's a dual diaphragm booster in there.. My foot can feel exactly where/when the second diaphragm 'catches'.

1) Sounds like my car, the window felts are pretty wasted and I'm sure the guides and channels are a little bit worn..

2) Does that last 1/4" push the door beyond alingment with the body?  If so, then you need either new rubbers or new seals.  If th elast 1/4" makes the door line up nicely, you need to move the pin on the car in a little.

3) I like that mine does that, you can add friction modofier to it to stop it, but I want as much grab as possible..

4) I have  a nice scar on my inner fender from a bad hold down as well..

Paul the windows can be adjusted so they don't rattle when part way down. Pull your door panel and you will see the in and out ajustments at the top and adjust as needed. Check the plastic on the strikers and see if it is gone if it is, replace them with new ones(strikers) That should tighten up the doors.

Two Points to TorinoGTS... The striker bolts were missing the plastic sleeve..

(Begin short rant).. So I go up to the Elite, thinking I had two good strikers.. I had ONE... the other had no sleeve.. and out of the EIGHT I had kicking around the garage... how many were good? ZERO! $3 bought me new sleeves, so I changed em. Wow, whole different car now,, lol I have a feeling the rattles I was hearing was actually the doors on the pins bouncing around.

The only other issue is the engine is, well, lazy, and idles a bit with a skip.. besides going 'brr brr brr brr brr" (that is my stock v8 impression), it goes "brr brr brr pftt pftt brr pfft brr brr br pfft" every once in a while.. It's probably time for plugs.

Sounds like my cat pft pft pft !!! lol  Of course it is a Cougar! Ok enough! Bad wires maybe?  Probably should change plugs as well. Might try bumping the timing too. That year Ford had a lot of retard i the ignition for emissions.  Gary

Well, now I have to go look at mine..  (I don't recall seeing plastic sleeves at all but never really looked since my real problem was major door alignment troubles from the shop that painted the car 10 or 11 years ago causing the door to refuse to shut every once and a while).

Are the sleeves a NAPA or other auto parts store item?

Idle miss?  I hate those, throw a big cam in it and call it normal
:-)

Basic tune up is a good place to start, then vacuum lines, then carb, then plenty of other things to check next..  (We've had cars from two different manufacturers less than two years old start that, even with FI)

The sleeves are in the HELP! Section of most parts stores.. they list that they fit from 83-90, but they fit.
